Do Not Go Gentle: Successful Aging for Baby Boomers and All Generations ReviewDo Not Go Gentle: Successful Aging for Baby Boomers (And Everyone Else) is full of personal experiences which, on a visceral level, enables the reader to connect with the text. It is far removed from the usual, clinically dry, psychology textbook and much more akin to the self-help books from the 50s through the 70s which, as a young man, I found to be helpful. They put real life into the subjects of religion, philosophy and psychology and served me well during my 26 years as a high school psychology teacher. Now, however, I am a Greek Orthodox priest, and even though I have moved far away from many of the premises which I previously found so intriguing in those books, they nonetheless formed an indelible impression leading to what I am today. Do Not Go Gentle simply emphasizes what I learned many years ago: To stay young requires one to think young, to act young, and to surround oneself with others of a like mind - no matter what one's chronological age may be. The book reaffirms, for me personally, the philosophy that one is only as old as one believes oneself to be and, conversely, obsessing about age with its supposed limitations on exercise, travel and an active social life often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do Not Go Gentle is a legitimate and professional easy-reading treatise on coming to terms with aging which emphasizes growing older as opposed to simply growing old. As I often say, based on Eric Berne's "natural child ego state," I may grow older, but I refuse to grow up. The Ultimate Guide To Weight Training For Volleyball ReviewThis book is straightforward, unlike Complete Conditioning for Volleyball. I know exactly when and how to work out.
The off and pre-season programs are very solid.
The only thing I wish it had in it is more agility and plyometrics programs. The Ultimate Guide To Weight Training For Volleyball Overview

BodyChange: The 21 Day Fitness Program for Changing Your Body and Changing Your Life (includes exercise DVD) ReviewMontel Williams and his personal trainer, Wini Linguvic's fitness book is more than just a book of great photos and clear exercise descriptions. It is about focus, believing in yourself and making positive changes. It is about strength and control. It is a philosophy of living. And, mostly, it is about attitude.
Yes, you can do it. That's the inspiring message on every page of this book. Montel himself is grappling with a chronic illness, multiple sclerosis. And yet he just keeps going, understanding that as he pushes his body, he is empowering himself in every aspect of his life. Wini's been his trainer for the past five years and he attributes her approach to training as not only changing his body, but to changing his life.
Wini has lived this philosophy all her life. She's been training her body since she was a teenager and training clients for the past 15 years. As she says, "It's not just my body I've built in the gym." She's helped people achieve more results than they ever though they could achieve and now, together with Montel, she is reaching out to a larger public. Step by step, she takes you through the exercises and the clear photographs and descriptions make them especially easy to follow. They're very basic, but what is different is the philosophy behind them, the BodyChange philosophy. She guides you through the motions of the exercises and also guides you through the changes in thinking that will help you succeed. By following her program for just 21 days you will begin to form the habits that will last you a lifetime.
I'm proud and delighted to say that I'm Wini's mother. It's a joy to know how much she contributes to the world by devoting her life to helping people shape their bodies and attain their goals. She's quiet, strong and determined. There are a lot of photos of Wini in the book and she looks beautiful. But her beauty goes much deeper than that. Reading her words will help you understand. There is inspiration to gain from this book. Everyone can benefit from it. Highly recommended.BodyChange: The 21 Day Fitness Program for Changing Your Body and Changing Your Life (includes exercise DVD) Overview

A Beautiful New You: Inspiration and Practical Advice to Transform Your Looks and Your Life-- A Total Makeover Without Cosmetic Surgery ReviewI shelved self help books years ago until I let myself go too far away from myself. Laura DuPriest, like me, already walked this road and now she is guiding me back to the woman I once was with "A Beautiful New You". Honestly, she takes you by the hand and gently shows the reader, through her book, no matter how far you've gone away from yourself, you can come back, at any age! The pictures alone speak for the content of the book. Laura's 'before' picture shows a loving woman hiding underneath layers of self doubt - but watch out. In her 'after' picture, she comes out like a phoenix ascending from the ashes - looking breathtakingly 20 years younger. She writes simply and honestly from her heart. Her client stories are as compelling as her own. I love this book because it speaks to my own journey back as I now undertake it. For all those beautiful 40-60 year old women who remember the energy and vitality of their youth and want to reclaim their inner and outer beauty, your mentor has written a guide and provided you with a map. Now get to it! Get this book.A Beautiful New You: Inspiration and Practical Advice to Transform Your Looks and Your Life-- A Total Makeover Without Cosmetic Surgery Overview

The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Gymnastics ReviewThis book is nothing special in my opinion. I bought it expecting a discussion of how weight training can benefit gymnastics training. Unfortunately all I got was a general discussion of how to lift weights. There was little on programming, a decent discussion on periodization, and a good discussion of general lifting exercises...but why do you need general lifting exercises? There's nothing special here. It gives a decent, but not great, overview of how to lift for general conditioning and strength training. Basic questions such as:
How to incorporate weight training with gymnastic training
What lifts will help you power through sticking points in which gymnastic techniques
No discussion of appropriate volume.
One of the biggest problems this book has is it recommends a complete weightlifting regimen. You don't need that if you're training for gymnastics already. You get a lot of strength and explosive work through normal training. Adding a compelte lifting routine on top of that is a sure route to over-training.
I give this three stars because it is a good introductory weight lifting text. It just has nothing special for gymnasts. The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Gymnastics Overview

Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Running, Second Edition ReviewFirst, you must be aware of the fact that this book is part of a series of about 30 books called "Weight training for...", including diverse activities such as rugby, bowling and cheerleading, and which are very similar one another. The author had the wonderful idea of writing basically one book and selling 30. Genius.
The book is structured as follows:
- A running-specific introduction
- Generic advice about gym workouts: basic stuff like the necessity of warming up and cooling down and making sure you don't lift more weight than you can
- Tons of (generic) exercises
- Two pseudo-scientific articles (one about technique and another about nutrition). These were the only remotely useful bits of the book, and they were written by other specialists.
From the above, it doesn't sound so bad. You could even thing this book was worthwhile. This is why it is not:
- The only running-specific advice is contained in the introduction (and the two articles), which is just 9 pages long (with huge font and big tables!)). All the rest of the book is totally generic, addressed to runners, racquetball players and golfers alike. Seriously, there is no other running-specific advice anywhere else, meaning around 85% of the book.
- The explanations to the exercises are pretty basic, similar to what you'll find printed in most decent gym machines. No value added there.
- Even worse, not even the selection of the exercises seemed to be really thought for runners. Only 20% (12 out of 60) of the exercises are for legs. I'm totally for a balanced work-out and training the core muscles, but you'd think runners would want to focus just a little bit more that 20% on the legs, right?
- There is no distinction between sprinters, hurdlers, marathoners, ultramarathoners, etc., which you'd assume would require "slightly" different training routines. You are left wondering whether the author even knows that there are several kinds of runners.
- Most annoyingly, the text is full of ads inviting the reader to join the author's (paid) website. Which I will not.
I truly do not know what the other reviewers based their reviews on, but IMHO this book (and the whole series) is pretty much a waste of your hard-earned money.Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Running, Second Edition Overview
