Close Calls (Falcon Guides Mountain Climbing) ReviewJohn Long is really telling us cautionary tales. But if anyone can make you laugh, snort, and giggle at the thought of some poor sod hanging by a fingernail to a crumbling mountain ledge, John Long is that man. Also cartoonist Tami Knight has an equally irreverent sense of humor.
However, if you are not laughing too hard, you will notice Long's Commentary and Prevention notes on each tale are precise, well written and helpful. The big moral throughout is you can never ever be too careful when rock climbing. Also, never assume anything.
I think this is a particularly good book for young people who have an interest in rock climbing. A solemn, dry book would never do the trick. It is difficult to grab this group's attention, particularly since the hormones are raging, and they are certain of their immortality. But they adore gallows humor, and just perhaps a few of these safety measures will stick in their minds and hearts.
John Long has a knack of coming on like your new best friend. Similar to Stephen King, you feel like he is telling his stories just for you and no one else. So settle in and enjoy the read!

Paris to the Moon ReviewAdam Gopnik has provided me with some of my best laughs and best reads over the years in the New Yorker. His piece on the "Last Psychoanalysis" is my all time favorite essay. So, I ripped into this book and was delighted, engaged, dazzled by his skills to convey a country I adore but now realize I know only superficially. Hats off Gopnik for his: talent, this great travel book, and most of all: his ability to capture France in all its intricate nuances. This is an author not only to relish but to trust.Paris to the Moon Overview

Shadows at the Spring Show: An Antique Print Mystery (Antique Print Mysteries) ReviewAs a mystery lover, print collector, and adoptive mom, I picked up this book with high hopes. Unfortunately, it's a very thin mystery heavily padded with middlebrow arcana about prints, the protagonist's endless should-I-or-shouldn't-I-adopt musings, and makeweight of end-of-term professorial minutiae. B-o-r-i-n-g. The most dramatic event in the book features the protagonist's irritation at another single (white, healthy) female wanting to adopt a (white, healthy) female infant, rather than enthusiastically signing up for older, abused children of a different ethnicity. Instead of suggesting the other woman go to Eastern Europe for such a child, the protagonist sneers at her for not signing up to sainthood. By the time the book finally reaches its climax, there is a gymnasium full of people who could commit the crime ... well, sort of, if you stretch things and one of them is nuts ... But no character development, no unexpected twists or turns, and a lot of lectures on prints and the nature (per the author, one presumes) of adoption.Shadows at the Spring Show: An Antique Print Mystery (Antique Print Mysteries) Overview

The Cauliflower Chronicles: A Grappler's Tale of Self-Discovery and Island Living ReviewI first heard about Marshal Carper's "The Cauliflower Chronicles" through the internet and various discussions on MMA that I'd partaken in. Being a huge fan of BJ Penn, I was drawn to the idea of this book because of how related to my favorite fighter it was, and the fact that it might provide insight as to who he is in everyday life.
Though I remained intrigued with aspects of the book regarding BJ throughout the time I read it, I also found myself enticed by Marshal's personal story as well: Issues with his girlfriend of four years, traveling thousands of miles from home with no real sense of identity in his new surroundings, etc. Before I knew it, I wanted to keep reading because I wanted to know why he said Papo would change his life forever regarding jiu-jitsu, and if he did in fact hook up with the hot girl from Tennessee that was in one of his classes.
Once I started reading The Cauliflower Chronicles, I didn't put it down unless I had to. I brought it with me to class at night to read during our 15 minute break; I'd favor sluggishly finishing chapter after chapter instead of taking a mid-afternoon nap. The next thing I knew, I'd finished the book in two days; quicker than I finished BJ Penn's autobiography. Not only do Marshal's personal tales from back home and in Hilo, HI keep you interested, but the historical lessons he learned about Hawaii before it became a part of the United States also serve to make the reader aware of the problems we may not always encounter or see on the daily news, though that certainly does not mean they're any less serious.
I would strongly recommend The Cauliflower Chronicles to anyone; not just jiu-jitsu practitioners, or someone looking to study abroad for a semester in college, or fans of BJ Penn, but ANYONE who enjoys a great coming-of-age story. You can feel the passion in every page, and by the time you're finished, you'll feel like you know the author; hell, you might even become friends with him on Facebook like I did haha! The Cauliflower Chronicles: A Grappler's Tale of Self-Discovery and Island Living Overview
