Flexible Flyer Backyard Fun Swing Set with Plays ReviewThis swing set is not for people who expect perfect manufacturing upon delivery. If you expect that then look elsewhere. Instead what you get with this swing set is great value assuming that you have a bit of patience and that patience should pay off for years to come.
Life is like a box of chocolates... You never know what you are going to get.And with this swing set the box contains some surprises. For some reviewers they are missing parts and need to call up customer service. For me I received all of the parts but I had some screws that were too short (yes, I have some screws loose - ha ha) and I have a see saw that won't fit properly to the rest of the set and I had a bolt to the trapeze assembly that I had to have the local hardware store re-groove in order to work (more on this later). And for these problems as well as unclear instructions I have to deduct one star although in reality I think this is a 4.5 star product if I could rate it that way.
Am I satisfied with what I got? You bet! Sure I grumbled a lot due to issues but I had a blast putting it together despite the defects. And in reality the "problems" only cost me 3 trips to the local hardware store, a few dollars of longer screws, and sacrificing the fact that I won't be able to use the see saw without contacting customer support (which I'll do next - just haven't had the chance to yet). For the price and all of the gadgets on this thing I think it is a great value.
And I do believe that this swing set will last a long time and be a lot of fun for my daughter and her friends.
One thing that I haven't seen other reviewers mention that might be important to some people is that the swing set is only 6 feet tall. I personally am taller than 6 foot tall so the top bar is shorter than I am. For some folks that may be a smaller swing set than they would expect. If you are a parent and want to swing on the set with your daughter or son then be aware of the height limitation. I weigh over 200 pounds and I "tested" the set by sitting on it and doing "light swings" and the set held up fine under my weight although I have not yet been brave enough to test the set with bigger swings with my weight. I think my wife will do just fine with using the set if she wants to swing with my daughter though.
The above information is the pertinent information for the product itself. There is another aspect of this swing set that you should be aware of though which does not factor into the product rating but your own rating :). Specifically please be prepared, as a parent, to fail the intelligence test multiple times when putting this swing set together. Some of you are likely perfect but I'm certaintly not and many of the people that buy this swing set are not. Let me give some examples of ways that I failed the intelligence test which may or may not be applicable to you.
1) I put this swing set together in 108 degree heat in the middle of the summer of Arizona (fail!)
2) I tried to put this swing set together by myself rather than getting help (partial fail - I got it to work but it would have been easier to get help). Parents working together should realize that they have a choice of one parent watching the kid(s) while the other parent puts the set together. If they go with that option then the parent putting the set together may have difficulties but the kids will be isolated from the swear words from the other parents mouth as they put the set together :). Whereas if you go the other route you have to have a strategy to entertain the kids long enough somehow while both parents can find a way to work together. Tough unless you have family or friends to help with the care giving part :).
3) I tried to screw the bolt to the screw several times on this set without first visually aligning the bolt and the screw (fail! No matter how many times you turn the screw driver that screw won't go into the bolt unless it is aligned :) )
4) Assuming that screw lengths provided in the box are going to always fit the intended use for the swingset. (fail! I had issues with both the screws that attach the glider assembly to the top bar of the swing set and with the screws that attach the steps of the ladder to the ladder assembly of the slide. In both cases getting additional hardware helped. One funny story is that I spent 30 minutes trying to get a short screw to fit the bolt when no matter how many times I turned that screw driver it wasn't going to fit... Double fail! :) )
5) Assuming that when I got the A-frame (top bar and legs) of the swing set put together that the "hard part" was done (fail! Once the A-frame was together I found out that the leg positions in order to attach the see saw to the back right leg was important and I found out that the green cross bar on the left hand side of the A-frame needed to have holes so as to attach the slide. Both of these findings had me undo and re-do portions of the A-frame once I had it together)
6) Assuming that the bolt would fit the trapeze assembly screw for the chain link. (fail! The screw that I received attached to the trapeze chain link was poorly manufactured. I took the screw to my local hardware store and they 're-grooved' the screw by forcing a similar bolt as the intended bolt onto the screw assembly. A lot of work but I was proud with the result)
7) Assuming that the black plastic end-caps would fit the ends of the top-bar properly. (fail! I had to take a cutting knife and remove the inner lip of the three tiered black plastic end cap and then hammer it on in order to get it to fit. I had no problems with the end caps on the legs - just problems with the end caps on the top bar)
But I had a lot of fun failing these intelligence tests and I encourage you to do the same if you are up to it :).
