Soulville ReviewIf you care about character-driven storytelling, if you care about strong plotting and realistic dialogue, if you care about compelling narrative drive in a novel, then "Soulville" will satisfy in tall order. Mike Spector has created a unique 1970's Philadelphia setting, peopled by boxers, trainers, cornermen, and promoters that pull you into a riveting story -- a story about character, dreams, hope, persistence, and moxie.
Soulville is as much a state of mind as it is physical place. The central character is hard-edged Moish Moskowitz, one-time boxer who had his big shot many years before, now a trainer in a Philly gym, nurturing the up-and-coming talent orbiting about him. He brings along the promising Tyrone Braxton, only to find that he may have believed in Tyrone's boxing talent more than Tyrone did himself. The story is partially narrated by news photographer Nick Ceratto, whose voice serves as the linchpin in Spector's well-orchestrated novel, a voice of objectivity and humanity who delivers keen observations on what it means to give your all, to put yourself on the line in determining what the measure of a man means, to live with the way life's events play themselves out.
Spector is especially adept at crafting his gritty story; you can smell the sweat and feel the ambiance of the Soulville gym, understand what it's like to step into the ring and take a punch, sympathize with the personality traits Moish comes to demonstrate in living out his life now that his best days are long behind him. This is a novel about heart and, yes, about soul, a novel that will surprise and reward. You may think as you turn the pages that you know what's coming. But that's just when Spector switches gears and delivers delights that will keep you reading, keep you wanting more.
This is old-fashioned storytelling at its finest -- pure entertainment. Take a magic carpet ride back in time to Soulville; you'll be glad to linger there awhile.Soulville Overview
