Gorilla Playsets Blue Ridge Mountaineer Playground System ReviewWe bought this for our three-year old... a little young perhaps, but he really does like it. For us, we wanted to help maximize the short summers here, so we wanted as much covered space as possible. We opted to minimize assembly effort, so we did not build the picnic bench, the tic tac toe board (required cutting), or the decorative starbursts/suns near the peak of the roof. To build this, we hired a master carpenter for the day to assist. For best results we think knowledge of outdoor woodworking is recommended.
Pro:
-Sturdy, doesn't shake or wobble. I'm 210# and can climb the ramps and can ride down on the slide fine
-Will last: wood is treated to avoid moisture and rot, main timbers are beefy and coated with a dark green vinyl
-Tons of covered space (upper deck, slide, sandbox) to keep surfaces dry
-Came with a bonus ladder... mistake? In any event, if the rock wall or ramp ever need to be replaced, the ladder will be handy
-Came with a lot of other hardware and wood extras (e.g. extra vertical railings), which proved handy
-Gorilla customer service was top-notch... best customer service ever! No questions asked. No press 1 for this, 2 for that. Picked up after a few rings. Thank you!
-Military grade swings and hardware... beefy!
-At least 3 different shapes of rocks for the rock climbing wall... rotate them for more interest
Con:
-Assembly! Took us 30 man-hours to sort this out (took more than an hour just to move all the pieces off the huge pallet to the point of assembly and unbox)
-Instructions came in black and white... what!? Many items were nearly impossible to see, such as pre-drilled holes.
-Many instructions (and holes) were "approximate", so if you are a perfectionist, we recommend that you look at the objective of each step and think about was to achieve the same result (e.g. spacing decking 1/4" apart as directed results in a 1 1/2" gap on the other side, unsightly)
-Directions in all caps made it hard to read... would have preferred a larger font
-Hundreds? of wood pieces, none labeled... would have been especially helpful initially with the four main posts. The first 3 steps took two hours, and ~30% of the work we did had to be redone.
-Once piece was countersunk on the wrong side (although a replacement was in our hands within a week for free... see Pros for more)
-Took 3 1/2 weeks or so to arrive so don't tell your kid(s) they are getting one
-Do not recommend pre-drilling the vertical slats for the railing. Due to tolerance stack up, all the bottom holes would have missed. All 27 or so.
-Hardware box with swings arrived broken open... stuff was every where
-Would have loved the climbing wall rocks to be numbered 1, 2, 3 and/or be different colors... challenge your friends to climb without touching any of the "2's". You find this type of thing in rock climbing gyms and would have been awesome.
Neutral:
-We changed the order of assembly so that all needed two-man work was done first... I built the ramp and rock wall (etc.) on my own time
-We also changed some assembly sequence for what we thought would be easier assembly... read ahead, think, read again, think some more
-Recommend a hammer drill to drive the myriad of lag bolts used in the structure and bolts in the slide
-Tools used: vice grips, hammer drill, huge english/metric socket set, crescent wrench set, ratchet, level, square, cordless drill and bits, 5 fully charged 18V batteries (for cordless tools), rubber mallet.
-Download a color instruction on your own dime first, level the ground at that time too
Bottom line: Recommended, would do it again. Assembly is a one-time ordeal. Get through it and take some pride in having put this beast together.Gorilla Playsets Blue Ridge Mountaineer Playground System Overview

Gorilla Playsets Blue Ridge Pioneer Peak Swing Set ReviewI purchased this playset on a Sunday evening and it was sitting in my driveway on Thursday (i wasn't expecting it for another 5 days). Quick shipping!!!
After reading other reviews, I hired a professional to assemble the playset and anchor it down. The cost is hard to swallow at first, but the kids were able to enjoy the playset almost immediately. So it was money well spent. It took him 3 days and a total of about 16 hours to assemble the playset. The professional told me that it takes the average homeowner about 5 full weekends to assemble a playset of this magnitude.
The playset itself is a huge hit and is like having the park in your own backyard. The tire swing and bridge are favorites already. Lots and lots to do, even for a 3 year old and 5 year old. We love our new playset!
I was told that in order to ensure the life of this playset, that it would need to be stained in the spring and every couple of years after that. The main reason wooden playsets weaken over time is because they are always exposed to the sun. Thus unprotected wood becomes weakened by the sun over time.

Lifetime Deluxe Freestanding A-Frame Swing Set (Earthtone) ReviewI purchased this swing set because it was advertised as "heavy duty," and indeed it is - much more than the flimsy models you get at WalMart, etc. Also, the two previous backyard sets were made of wood and in the Florida weather, they lasted less than 8 years each. This set is heavy as advertised and takes a lot of muscle to horse the pieces around to get it put together. I'm 73 years old and in relatively good shape, but trying to get some of the holes lined up for the bolts was a challenge. Still, everything worked fine and all hardware was present and accounted for.
The only quibble I have with the set is the video advertising. It showed kids swinging on this set without anchors of any kind and indicated that the set was more or less portable and could be moved around. WRONG! When you have two kids swinging vigorously on the set it begins to buck up on its hind legs then front. Obviously in need of anchoring. I first placed 4 12-inch screw anchors into the ground and even so, the legs still pulled an inch or so from the ground when swinging high. So, I removed them and re-installed 30-in screw anchors - which did the job. Now the swing set doesn't "buck" or "walk," but stays all four legs firmly on the ground.
I also found out through experimentation, that you can attach one of those infant bucket seats from swing sets by putting its hooks through the chain just below the swinging acrobatic bar in the middle and it makes a wonderful third swing for a small child and is easily removed when kids want to use the acrobat bar and handles.
With all the rain we get, I'm hoping it will live up to its "no rust" adversiting. Otherwise, I have four granddaughters, their mother, and their grandmother (my wife) who are very pleased with this swing set, so that makes me pleased as well.Lifetime Deluxe Freestanding A-Frame Swing Set (Earthtone) Overview

Gorilla Playsets Outing III Playground System ReviewI spent several months researching the ideal swing set and even contemplated building my own. My wife talked me into the Congo III after she saw it go on sale.
First off - wow, I am so glad I didn't attempt to build my own. This is a smaller set and it still took about 24 man hours to assemble. It is also rock solid. I could not have built something similar from scratch at the price Costco was offering it for (even at full retail).
A lot of the research I did suggested that big box retailers only offered shoddy designs with cheap materials - but the quality of wood was amazing. Very few knots in the wood - and very straight.
There are a few misgivings I have about this particular swingset.
1) The stain/sealant applied to the wood is very sparse and rubs off easily. I spent 2-3 hours applying my own coat of sealant after assembly.
2) The torque nuts had to be machined with a Dremel tool in order to fit all of the screw heads. This was unfortunate and resulted in an hour or so of wasted time.
3) The kit was missing a torque nut (which I had to run down to Ace Hardware to buy a replacement for). This, however, was the only missing piece.
4) For the larger screws the instructions fail to suggest that you pre-drill a starter hole. Failure to do this will cause the wood to crack (bad).Gorilla Playsets Outing III Playground System Overview

Kettler Trimmstation Swing Set ReviewI wasn't sure what to expect as at the time of purchase there were no reviews on the set. It is very well made with a nice bright paint. Putting it together was a bit of a hassle, as none of the pieces are marked or labeled in any way, same with all the nuts and bolts. It took us maybe 30 min. to identify all the bolts, washers and parts and label them. Once we did that, putting it together was fairly easy.
The picture showing how the set goes in the ground (or what I assumed were the ground anchors) is misleading, the "anchor" basically is piece of steel tube that goes through a hole at the foot of the set, forming a T - nothing like the stable footing shown here, so we had to dig fairly deep holes and cement the set in the ground. Without doing that the climbing part of the set is too high off the ground, so my 3 yo who is very tall, has no way of getting on it. We also bought the slide that attaches to the set - that was very tough to put together and the other disadvantage is that the middle part of the slide is metal, so it gets very hot during the day.
Update Oct. 2011 - this set is still used daily by now 4 and 7 yo and is in awesome shape. The paint is in perfect condition with zero maintenance on my part. The only part that shows wear is the middle part of the slide. The amazing part to me as parent is that my kids still find challenging things to do on it and I can totally see them using it for several more years. Easy Outdoor Space Dome Climber ReviewWe received ours this week and I just assembled it this afternoon. It took me 2 hours by myself. The instructions are straight forward and everything was in good shape, even though the box was very beat up in shipping. A 13mm box end wrench and a 5mm metric allen socket made the work MUCH easier and quicker.
I'm very impressed with the rigidity of it. Supports me easily and I'm 180#. It's a little taller than I'd like for our 3yo. And the specs say 46x91", but ours measures 49x94 assembled. Not a big deal, but something I noticed. Anyway, she's small for her age and will grow into it. The colors are bright and vibrant. The pieces seem high quality.
