Fly on the Wall: How One Girl Saw Everything ReviewSixteen-year old Gretchen Yee is a pretty typical teenager. Sort of. She attends the Manhattan High School for the Arts, otherwise known as Ma-Ha. There, she gets to take not only the normal, everyday classes of Literature and PE, but also Drawing and Sculpture. Gretchen is a great artist, and she's especially partial to the comic-book style of drawing. Not to mention that her personal hero is Spiderman. She has a best friend name Katya, who now seems to spend all her time either hanging out with the poseurs behind the school, smoking cigarettes, or babysitting her three younger sisters.
When it comes to the opposite sex, though, Gretchen has no idea what she's doing. Actually, she doesn't even know what they're doing half the time. Her parents are in the throes of a divorce, she has no close male friends, and her kind-of ex-boyfriend, Shane, now spends most of his time acting like an idiot. How can she ever know what goes on inside a guy's head when they act like such total morons most of the time?
After casually mentioning one day after school that she wished she could be a fly on the wall in the boy's locker room, something really, really strange happens. Gretchen wakes up the next morning as, you guessed it, a fly on the wall of the boy's locker room. Never mind the fact that she can't wrap her mind (her own mind, thank goodness, not a fly mind) around what's happened, now she spends several hours every day seeing high-school guys get naked! In front of her! Without clothes! And she can't close her eyes because her fly-body has no eyelids!
Needless to say, the things Gretchen sees and hears inside the boy's locker room at Ma-Ha are (ha!ha!) eye-opening, to say the least. Who knew that Titus, the object of her undying affections, gets tired of hearing his friends talk bad about homosexuals? Or that Malachy, a guy she'd never paid much attention to before, has secretly been dating her best friend? Or that one of the Art Poseurs is [..] Or that she'd spent so much time wondering if she was invisible, all the time being crushed on by a guy she'd never seen before?
FLY ON THE WALL is funny, honest, and a totally fun read. Who wouldn't wish, just once, to have a fly's-eye-view of the inner sanctum of the teenage male? For Gretchen, her time as a fly teaches her a lot about not only the male species, but her own wishes, desires, and needs. A real winner!

Candy Apple #23: Rumor Has It ReviewWhen a new girl named Mailee moves into town, Audrey becomes fascinated with how down-to-earth, fun, and friendly she is to everyone. Audrey knows she wants to become friends with her, but is afraid to ask.
To figure out what Mailee thinks of her, Audrey starts a slam book. The rules are simple. Everyone uses a number, not their name, when they're entering information about other people, and they have to do it alone. When they're done, they have to sneakily pass it on to the next person.
When rumors start flying that Audrey was the one who made the slam book, she starts to worry that Mailee won't get the book or, worse, will think less of her. In the process of trying to get Mailee to like her, however, Audrey ignores her best friend, Carmen, who's been acting strange ever since her parents called a family meeting.
Will Audrey manage to make friends with Mailee while still staying friends with Carmen? Why is Carmen acting so different? Will Audrey get caught for making the slam book?
RUMOR HAS IT is a fun, fast book to read. The characters are pretty well-developed, and the plot moves along quickly enough to keep the reader's attention. Those who like realistic fiction and the other Candy Apple books will enjoy reading this one.

FireHouse ReviewAfter reading and for the most part enjoying Snodgrass Vacation by the same author, I thought I'd give another of his books a try. It took a bit to settle into the story (going from slapdash comedy to serious attempt at portraying teenage life in high school is sort of a big switch on my end).
The story focuses on Zach, a former druggie who sings lead for a small-time band while also wrestling. Both groups apply pressure for their activity to be the main focus in Zach's life. The band treats him like friends, but their lifestyle is ragged, nights full of partying, grungy hair, and a total disregard for school and safety. With wrestling, he has no friends, but enjoys the same thrill stepping onto the mat as he does standing before a crowd with a microphone.
The first problem of the story is that much of Zach's change, from grunge to wrestler, has already happened by the time we meet him. He's quit smoking and drinking to make sure he meets his weigh-ins and doesn't "gas out" in the middle of matches. I would have liked to have been there when the clash between Wrestling and Rock weren't just about time schedules and dual-booking, but actual, physical decisions carrying far greater consequences for his health and life.
It also doesn't help that Zach comes across as a jerk. Yes, he's a loaner, and lacks self-esteem, and the author portrays him as a jerk on purpose...but that still means he's a jerk. It takes a bit to warm up to him. The wrestling matches help with that.
I was unsure just how much I'd enjoy this book for the first quarter or so. After a few of the meets, however, I was hooked. I found myself caring how well Zach did with every match. He never acted like his life depended on the win, but his opinion of himself, and the effort he was putting into the sport, did. Even better, the author rarely made the outcome of the event clear prior to the wrestle, having Zach lose as much as he won. By halfway through, I was enthralled with each meet, cheering him on in my head. It is very much a redemptive story in this matter, and I found myself flying through the story.
The wrestling matches are full of technical detail, any wrestling aficionados should find this both comfortable and familiar, but those who don't know the difference between a firehouse carry and a full nelson might be left scratching their heads.
The worst problem, though, was in the final fourth of the book. Both Zach's performances in singing and wrestling were always in doubt before every gig and match, but by the end, that uncertainty was gone. The feel-good-ending was kicking in, and it seemed the author didn't have the guts, or the desire, to have it break away into something more. His reliance on friends was touching, but it also seemed to overwhelm any real need to choose between his two loves.
Overall, I'd give this 3 and 1/2 stars. Since I can't rate it that here on Amazon, tie goes to the author, hence the 4. I will add that while nothing in the story ever reached a sense of urgency or worry, I flew through this book far faster than I normally read. I sat down at 50% and read all the way to the end in one sitting. The author's writing style is rather plain, but at the same time, this leads to a very smooth, uninterrupted reading. There's no ego or self-indulgence, just a tale told earnestly and truthfully as possible.FireHouse Overview

The Sister Switch (Candy Apple) ReviewCaitlin and Andie are excited to start junior high. They are identical twins on the outside but are different in their personalities and interests. Caitlin is an excellent student who has high hopes of being a part of the Jazz Ensemble group, while Andie would rather be on the field kicking the soccer ball.
Olive used to be a close friend of both girls until she went with Andie to soccer camp. Caitlin chose not to go and the other two girls became closer. Caitlin misses that and hopes that someday she and Olive can be best buddies again.
School starts off with a bang: Caitlin has to take a physical fitness test and just knows she won't be able to pass it. It would be a piece of cake for Andie, so just this once, why don't they trade places? It will just be for a day.... Or so the girls think!
The sisters soon realize they are caught in a big mess! Can they get out of it without anyone's feelings being hurt? How will Olive take the news that her best friend has been lying to her?
This is a fun, entertaining book. It kept me anxiously reading to find out who would realize the twins had switched places and what would happen next.

Throwback ReviewIt's great to see some new wrestling books coming out, because there aren't enough stories about our sport. "Throwback" contains some of the most realistic and gripping wrestling scenes ever written. Any wrestler or fan will instantly recognize and enjoy these. On top of that, there are some intriguing subplots that involve peer pressure, moral choices, and tolerance by high school students of others who are in different social circles. This is a fantastic new book about a great old sport.Throwback Overview

Double Dutch (Aladdin Fiction) ReviewThe book I have read was Double Dutch by Sharron M.Daper. I chose this book because it looked interesting. The main characters are; Delia, Randy, Yolanda, Toliver Twins, Cherline, and Narrator. Girls will most likely like this book because of the drama, and double dutching (ages:12-15).The main events are, Delia has a secret she can't read, and the finials of the Double Dutch competion. The theme of this book is friends are there for you no mater what.
My opinion of this book is that it is super. The weakness about this book is nothing its great! The good thing about the book is you can relate to it. It was interesting when the twins' mother bribed them. Della kept secret that she couldn't read. Her friend Yolanda spread the rumor that the Toliver twins were going to blow up the school because she was scared of them.
My conclusion on this book is that it is great and will relate to girls in high school and middle school. I strongly recommend this book for anyone to read. I recommend this book because a lot of girls can relate to this book.
