Candy Apple #23: Rumor Has It ReviewWhen a new girl named Mailee moves into town, Audrey becomes fascinated with how down-to-earth, fun, and friendly she is to everyone. Audrey knows she wants to become friends with her, but is afraid to ask.
To figure out what Mailee thinks of her, Audrey starts a slam book. The rules are simple. Everyone uses a number, not their name, when they're entering information about other people, and they have to do it alone. When they're done, they have to sneakily pass it on to the next person.
When rumors start flying that Audrey was the one who made the slam book, she starts to worry that Mailee won't get the book or, worse, will think less of her. In the process of trying to get Mailee to like her, however, Audrey ignores her best friend, Carmen, who's been acting strange ever since her parents called a family meeting.
Will Audrey manage to make friends with Mailee while still staying friends with Carmen? Why is Carmen acting so different? Will Audrey get caught for making the slam book?
RUMOR HAS IT is a fun, fast book to read. The characters are pretty well-developed, and the plot moves along quickly enough to keep the reader's attention. Those who like realistic fiction and the other Candy Apple books will enjoy reading this one.

In His Good Hands (Harlequin Superromance) ReviewThis has to be the best book about a larger heroine there is in print. Realistic and inspirational for those insecure about their weight, I was so grateful for the author for writing something that shows good health and exercise in a positive light, instead of the current trend of having the hot guy fall for the dumpy woman and telling her there's nothing wrong with her lifestyle (even though HE spends all day in the gym!).
I loved that Brett was attracted to Renita's personality; but that he helped her to achieve a healthier lifestyle at the same time he began to become attracted to her physically. Thank you to the SuperRomance line for publishing realistic stories that encourage women to take care of themselves.
Both Brett and Renita were interesting characters with strong individual character arcs. I'm not usually a fan of reading about teenagers, but Brett's daughter was realistic and ultimately likeable too.
I loved the inclusion of a blonde hero: not every man has black hair and blue eyes, and I like it when an author introduces some variety into her men.
However, then there's my big gripe.
If you're an American reader, you're probably going to be completely oblivious to the fact every aspect of Australia has been removed from this book, and it's unfortunate that North American publishers refuse to feed their readers anything other than US culture.
These `Australians' are American characters, using American terms of measurement instead of the metric system, attending school proms when there's no such thing as a prom in Australia, eating cookies when we call them biscuits, doing `math' when we call it maths, having `gym class' at school when Australians have PE class. They're talking about `jocks' in school when we never use that word, using `cell phones' when we have mobile phones, carrying `purses' when here we have handbags. Your behind is an arse - an `ass' is a donkey. We would NEVER measure something in miles or yards, and nobody would know or care what their weight was in pounds.
We don't have pennies in our currency, so why was everyone talking about them instead of cents?! We put icing on our cakes, not `frosting'. We eat takeaway and would never talk about going for `takeout' - and there you won't be able to buy `French fries', you'd get chips!
Chadstone Shopping Centre is an actual place. American editors have no right to change the spelling of our place names. Surely American readers can cope with reading `Centre' spelt `RE'!! Then there was the distracting overuse of `gotten'.
I had to Google the `Pillsbury Doughboy' because I had no idea who or what it was - there's no way an overweight Australian would use that term to describe their body; it's an American expression!
This book may not change your life, but it was a very good addition to the SuperRomance line. Now if only the publishers would allow Australian books to actually read like they're set here.In His Good Hands (Harlequin Superromance) Overview

Bethany and her BFF, Moni, decide to try out for the cheerleading squad -mostly as a joke. When they actually make it, they're stunned, but no more so than their friends and family.
Cheerleading involves so many rules, but Bethany's questions aren't answered in the massive rule book. What happens when your best guy friend is mad that you've turned cheerleader? Why does the most popular guy in school start talking to you? Does he actually like you? When will the rest of the cheerleaders treat you as one of them?
Bethany and Moni are almost humiliated when they show up to cheer at a wrestling match and no one else for the team is there. Instead of giving up, the girls cheer through the match, though it's hard when you don't understand the rules of wrestling.
But that match just might have gotten them noticed by two super-hot guys. Now they're both dating boys, but also trying to navigate through the waters of high school without being attacked by a shark.
Charity Tahmaseb and Darcy Vance team up to create a world where geeks mix with the popular crowd. While the characters bring up several social questions, the story is really just pure fun.

Body By Night ReviewBody by Night by Zuri Day is an excellent story about a plus size gal, D'Andra Smalls, and her quest to live a healthier life after an emergency room scare. She decides to go to Bally's but of course she starts having second thoughts and is sitting in her car debating whether or not to enter when this tall drink of chocolate comes up to her and convinces her to go on in. Night is a personal trainer who's working on opening up his own gym. He just got out of a bad relationship and is not necessarily looking for a new one when he finds this beautiful, woman in her car waiting to go inside. She's not his usual supermodel looking type, but he decides to help her out on her quest to be healthy and in the process, falls for her.
D'Andra has her issues with men, especially after finding her childhood friend in bed with her boyfriend and having a mother and sister who treat her like Cinderella before she meets her fairy godmother. Although she tries to keep herself from falling for Night, she does anyway. But they still have to deal with his conniving ex, her selfish sister, her emotionally abusive mother and all kinds of stuff.
This is an excellent book! I love that D'Andra's reasons for loosing weight had nothing to do with being a size 2 but with being healthy. That's a much more positive message. And Night was fabulous. He had his own issues to work through and he wasn't looking for romance any more than she was. But romance found them where they least expected it. If you want a good, emotionally satisfying read, pick up Body by Night by Zuri Day.Body By Night Overview
