Candy Apple #23: Rumor Has It ReviewWhen a new girl named Mailee moves into town, Audrey becomes fascinated with how down-to-earth, fun, and friendly she is to everyone. Audrey knows she wants to become friends with her, but is afraid to ask.
To figure out what Mailee thinks of her, Audrey starts a slam book. The rules are simple. Everyone uses a number, not their name, when they're entering information about other people, and they have to do it alone. When they're done, they have to sneakily pass it on to the next person.
When rumors start flying that Audrey was the one who made the slam book, she starts to worry that Mailee won't get the book or, worse, will think less of her. In the process of trying to get Mailee to like her, however, Audrey ignores her best friend, Carmen, who's been acting strange ever since her parents called a family meeting.
Will Audrey manage to make friends with Mailee while still staying friends with Carmen? Why is Carmen acting so different? Will Audrey get caught for making the slam book?
RUMOR HAS IT is a fun, fast book to read. The characters are pretty well-developed, and the plot moves along quickly enough to keep the reader's attention. Those who like realistic fiction and the other Candy Apple books will enjoy reading this one.

Candy Apple #3: Miss Popularity ReviewCassie Cyan Knight has got it all: popularity, awesome friends, great personality, and, most importantly, a killer fashion sense.
Even her parents are cool, which is why Cassie doesn't hold a grudge against them when they drop the bombshell. Her dad got a promotion, and, in two weeks, Cassie will be transplanted from sunny, friendly, fashionable Houston to the frigid ice storms of Maine. Cassie doesn't let it get her down, though. She's nervous, sure, but with a few encouraging words from her best friend, Cassie feels like she can tackle anything.
However, her new classmates at Oak Grove Middle School seem determined to shoot down Cassie's upbeat attitude. They're rude, they make fun of her Texas accent, and even mock her bright, happy wardrobe choices. Clearly, the population of Oak Grove Middle needs a reminder that there are fashion options outside of boots and fleece pullovers.
With the help of a kindred spirit or two, Cassie jumps right in to find her fabulous niche at Oak Grove Middle, even if it means butting heads with Mean Mary Ellen McGinty, who refuses to admit that fashion might have a place in their school.
I had a few issues with this book, mainly with the lack of flaws in the main character and the unbelievable circumstances of there being absolutely no fashion clique at Oak Grove. One other major issue comes from the heavy name-dropping of products and companies in the fashion industry. They are so peppered throughout that sometimes it feels like one big advertisement.
Be that as it may, though, Cassie's attitude throughout her trials was refreshing, and could serve as a good pep talk to those younger girls who might need reassurance that they are in charge of their own happiness.

Classic Crews: A Harry Crews Reader ReviewIf you like the bizarre "Southern Gothic" of Carson McCullers and Flannery O'Connor -- and if you appreciate thoughtful variations on established themes -- then Harry Crews is a novelist well worth your time. He'll probably never make it into the canon, but his work compares favorably with the best American postmodernists, and this is one time when it's best to forget what your English teacher tells you and form your own opinion. Unlike some of the postmodernists, Crews's startling originality is always rooted in palpably human experience; his characters, strange though they may be, never cease to function as PEOPLE, first and foremost. Highly recommended for readers who appreciate a vibrant style and a conscious twist on familiar literary traditions. One of the best American writers of the past 30 years.Classic Crews: A Harry Crews Reader Overview

Glee: The Beginning: An Original Novel (Glee Original Novels) ReviewI read the book online and am glad to have not bought it. It is factually in accurate. first off, its the beginning of their sophomore year. In the first season, Rachel mentions that this is her first year in glee. Therefore, Sandy's firing and all of that happened yet. The pilot establishes that the glee club didn't exist until Mr. Schuester resurrected it. Why, because Sandy was fired. If you assume that the pilot began in September then the firing happened shortly after Rachel became a part of glee.
The author obviously only gave a curiosity glance at the source material before writing the book. Also events are mentioned that have never even been suggested in the series, like Rachel doing the announcements, Or Cheerios money drives. (Brittany wasn't even a character until episode 3 and Santana didn't have a name until episode 2)
So if you are for something that fits the canon and will add to the goodness that is glee, this isn't it. The Fanfiction author TheMinsk on [...] writes better works that this.
So reasons to not by the book:
1) ignores the pilot for the most part (by not remembering that there is only 9 months to fit 21 episodes)
2) It amplifies the characters way too much
3) mentions items and songs that couldnt exist yet for the characters (OMG by Usher)
4) ignores what little established pacing and continuity existed in pilot and first season.
Yes it is a prequal, don't waste you money. Don't bother with foreign exchange either. Send money to the fanficton authors, or Ryan MurphyGlee: The Beginning: An Original Novel (Glee Original Novels) Overview

Ball Don't Lie Review"I could tell you a lot about this game....
"How a dark gym like Lincoln Rec is a different world. Full of theft and dunk, smooth jumpers and fragile egos. Full of its own funky politics and stratification. Music bleeding out of old rattling speakers from open to close. Old rhythm and blues. Stevie Wonder. Aretha Franklin. Funk. Motown. Marvin Gaye. Sometimes Jimmy gets talked into hard-core rap on weekends. Or Trey sneaks in his three-year-old demo tape.
"Always music.
"There are fat rats that scurry through the lane on game point. Beady eyes on the man with the ball. There are roaches congregating under the bleachers.
"There is so much dust on the slick floor that sometimes guys will go to stop and slide right out of the gym. Every time there's a break in the action, ten guys put palm to sole for grip.
"There are a hundred different ways of talking and a thousand uses of the word motherf____r.
"There are no women.
"In the winter there are so many homeless bodies spread out across court two you can hardly see the floor. There are leaks when it rains. Rusted pots are set out to collect heavy drops. Sometimes a guy will track in mud and everybody throws a fit. Jimmy sets out a twenty-five-dollar heater and everybody puts their hands up to it before they play."
Court one at Lincoln Rec is the epicenter of Sticky's life in L.A. and of his dreams for the future. Lincoln Rec is a constant for him, a positive one, unlike that series of light-colored minivans that have repeatedly arrived at the group home over the years carrying foster parents who pick him up, make him big promises about a real home...promises that for various reasons always go up in smoke and leave him, once again, chillin' back at the group home.
Court one is where he, a seventeen-year-old white boy, builds his skills playing an extremely physical style of pickup basketball with an assortment of tough, older black guys. On court one, where either you are seriously in the zone or you're spending all day with your butt in the bleachers, Sticky is determined to play and win.
As Dante, a former pro player and a regular at Lincoln Rec explains to him, Sticky has started the "life being a race" thing "three stones back." Not only has Sticky had to deal with the failings of his drug-addicted, prostitute mother and, later, with those repeated rejections by foster parents, but he also has "that mental thing, where you gotta do stupid stuff over and over and over." The depictions of Sticky's frequent ritualistic behaviors, revealing his struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, are agonizing. But, ironically, it is that same compulsion that keeps him so focused on constantly perfecting his skills, whether they be related to basketball or to other, less noble, pursuits.
"Won't you help me girl
Just as soon as you can?"
--Al Green
There's the bright high school girl with the beautiful green eyes, Anh-thu, who works in Miller's Outpost. Sticky meets her one day when he drops in there to steal some new pants. "Annie" seems able to see through the hard shell to the real Sticky.
The story bounces back and forth from Lincoln Rec to scenes of Sticky's early days with his mother, the different experiences with foster families, playing J.V. hoops at school, hanging out partying with the guys, and being with Anh-thu. All together, there must be a hundred different characters we meet, and each one is unique and memorable. A number of those characters are homeless, some sleeping on cardboard on court two, others in a public toilet somewhere. Sticky's world is on the underbelly side of L.A. And regularly we get glimpses of the "other world" in the form of faceless businessmen who come walking in on their lunch break to watch what's going on and then return to their offices to tell their co-workers about the games, the fights, and, undoubtedly, about the skinny white kid with the moves.
"Rob's weight is on the back of his heels on defense. Waiting.
"The face rattles off truth in situations like this. Fear flickering in Rob's wide eyes: Get too close and Sticky sticks a jumper in his eye. Too many possibilities when the man with the ball gets to say which way and when, how fast and for how long. And you can multiply all that by ten if the guy can play. Get busted on in front of everybody. Get dragged all game by the skinny white kid everybody talks about.
"All the loudmouths on the sideline are at full attention.
"Sticky jab-steps right and pulls back, keeps his dribble.
"Rob retreats.
"Sticky is: through the legs, around the back, playing hoops with a yo-yo. Walk the dawg when everybody calls for a trick. Hold the ball too long.
"He is: stolen Nike shoes, stolen mesh shorts, ankle socks. Back and forth handling the ball, knees bent, his eyes in Rob's eyes. Piss off the old purists who cry for a return to fundamentals. The ones who've lost so much vision they're blind to the dance of it all. The spin move like a skirt lifting pirouette on callaused toes. The dip. Jump shot splashing through the net like a perfect dismount."
A damaged white teenager, a bunch of tough black "ballers," a dark rec center in L.A., and the girl with the eyes come together to make this gritty, urban story a powerful, rhythmic read. The thrumming beats and the sweat dripping out from between the pages also place author Matt de la Pena squarely in contention for Rookie of the Year honors.
You'll see this on my Best of 2005 list later this year.

Slob ReviewBoth funny and poignant, I never knew I could enjoy a middle-grade novel as much as I did "SLOB" by Ellen Potter.
Owen Birnbaum is fat. But he wasn't always that way. Something bad happened and now he's the fattest kid at school, spending his days being teased endlessly by his classmates, afraid that the new school psycho who carries a switchblade in his sock is out to get him, tortured by his cruel gym teacher, and dealing with his sister who has decided she wants to dress and look like a boy and be called Jeremy.
Life isn't all bad though. Owen is a genius and he can invent cool stuff, like a TV that shows the past--a past that is scary, but one that can answer the questions burning inside his head...if only he can get it to work.
When the Oreos from Owen's lunch keep disappearing, he's sure the school psycho is the culprit. Owen puts together a plan--along with a neat new thief catching device--to help capture the Oreo snatcher. What he doesn't consider, however, is that science might not hold all the answers.
Every middle-grade reader will find something to enjoy in "SLOB". More than a story about an overweight kid who is teased profusely, "SLOB" is the story of one boy's quest to uncover the truth about the tragic event that altered his life forever.
Speaking directly to the reader, Owen shares his struggles at school--which stink, but he's not overly upset about because he's smarter than all those guys anyway, his sister's involvement in GWAB (Girls Who Are Boys), the torture he endures at the hands of his gym teacher Mr. Wooly, and how things change for him once the psycho comes to school--not only is Mason Ragg a psycho, he's a smart psycho.
Opening with the line, "My name is Owen Birnbaum, and I'm probably fatter than you are.", Owen does not suffer from low self-esteem, as one might imagine. His being fatter than you is "pure statistics". Immediately, the reader is drawn in by Owen, and Owen is so entertaining and engaging that the reader will never want to stop learning more about him until the last page of the book. But then again, if the reader is anything like me, she's hoping for a sequel.
The contraptions Owen invents are amazing, and Owen describes them to you in detail and shares how they work. I can see a lot of middle-grade boys trying to recreate or improve upon Owen's inventions after reading "SLOB".
Potter has done such an excellent job of making Owen real for her audience that you'll soon forget that an adult woman wrote this book. And if parents are cool enough to pick up a copy of "SLOB" or to sneak their child's copy when he/she is off at school, they will be treated to references to The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Charlie's Angels and other hit shows from their youth. Of course, in Owen's world they are Retro TV, but we adults like to call them classics. I have to admit Owen's mother's name--which is Zelda--reminds me of The Legend of Zelda game my son played on his original Nintendo video game system.
I highly recommend "SLOB" by Ellen Potter. Funny and offbeat, yet equally poignant, "SLOB" is destined to add more awards to this talented author's portfolio.

Double Dutch (Aladdin Fiction) ReviewThe book I have read was Double Dutch by Sharron M.Daper. I chose this book because it looked interesting. The main characters are; Delia, Randy, Yolanda, Toliver Twins, Cherline, and Narrator. Girls will most likely like this book because of the drama, and double dutching (ages:12-15).The main events are, Delia has a secret she can't read, and the finials of the Double Dutch competion. The theme of this book is friends are there for you no mater what.
My opinion of this book is that it is super. The weakness about this book is nothing its great! The good thing about the book is you can relate to it. It was interesting when the twins' mother bribed them. Della kept secret that she couldn't read. Her friend Yolanda spread the rumor that the Toliver twins were going to blow up the school because she was scared of them.
My conclusion on this book is that it is great and will relate to girls in high school and middle school. I strongly recommend this book for anyone to read. I recommend this book because a lot of girls can relate to this book.

On the Devil's Court (Pendragon Cycle) Review"On the Devil's Court" is a wonderfully fast, easy, and exciting read. Joe Faust's life has gone into the dumps, and the only thing that matters anymore is basketball. Unfortunately, his basketball game is rotten these days too. So, Joe sells his soul to the devil for a perfect season of basketball. Or does he? Readers are propelled through the book by one realistic conflict after another, with plenty of surprises to keep the reader guessing about the state of Joe's soul. I've taught this book to high school freshmen for a number of years now, and the boys always love it. This is a great book for younger readers, or slower readers, because it is written in clean, simple sentences that few readers will have trouble with. All in all, a first-rate first novel! On the Devil's Court (Pendragon Cycle) Overview

Payback Time ReviewThis book sounded really good from the write up on it. It has a little mystery and intrigue in the high school sport area. I really liked the start of the book and could relate to Mitch (danny). The story gets really good as Mitch and Kimi try to figure out just who Angel is and where he came from.
The story at the end just falls flat and ends very abruptly. It finishes so fast that you feel like you missed alot about what exactly happened and you want to read more about the characters and their lives.Payback Time Overview
