Sorcery at Caesars: Sugar Ray's Marvelous Fight ReviewBOOK REVIEW
Leonard-Hagler story packs a wallop
By Doug Most, Globe Staff | August 12, 2008
Don't be deceived by the title of Steve Marantz's terrific new boxing book, "Sorcery at Caesars: Sugar Ray's Marvelous Fight."
Marantz, a longtime Boston journalist who covered boxing for the Globe, pulls no punches of his own in letting the reader know which fighter he was pulling for when Brockton's Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard squared off in their epic title bout on April 6, 1987, in Las Vegas. Marantz wanted to see the angry, shaven-headed Hagler wipe the perpetual smile off of Leonard's famous pretty-boy mug.
Of course, as anyone who followed boxing when boxing actually mattered knows, things didn't quite work out for the Marvelous one.
Surprisingly, the weakest part of the book may be its climax, the 12-round fight between a legitimate middleweight brawler known for being able to take a punch even better than he could deliver one and the aging, puffed-up welterweight from Washington, D.C., named after singing legend Ray Charles. The underdog Leonard saw Hagler as the perfect foil against whom to conclude his golden career, but the fight details almost go by too quickly, with not enough analysis of the blow-by-blow to fully convey how Leonard accomplished what he did.
Fortunately, by the time readers get to the fight, they will be so engrossed in the back story of what led up to it that the punching almost feels anticlimactic. Marantz does a terrific job of bringing to life the vastly different stories of these two proud but troubled men who came together for one night of brawling and bloodshed.
The details of Leonard's drug and spousal abuse reveal him to be as two-faced as Marantz argues, a man who was married more to his sport and the shady characters that come with it than he ever was to his family. And while Hagler certainly comes off as the more sympathetic character, it's hard to actually root for him because when the fight finally comes he's become almost a shell of his former self, someone who merely craves Leonard's fame.
The book's strength is in the way Marantz takes readers inside Leonard's head as he first teases Hagler for years about a possible big-payday fight, finally agrees to it, and then does everything he can, no matter how sneaky, to weaken his opponent before they set foot in the ring. By the time the bell for Round 1 clangs, it feels as if Hagler is already burnt toast.
The subject of possible drug use by Hagler is glossed over too lightly, because it remains not entirely clear how much he used, when he used, or for that matter, if he really used at all. The handling of the subject almost feels forced, as if Marantz wanted Hagler to have used drugs as Leonard had, so that their lives mirrored each other's as much as possible.
That's nitpicking, though. In the end, it's hard to not feel sorry for both men, who finally got the fight they wanted, and to see how much it tormented them.

Cooperative Games and Sports, Joyful Activities for Everyone (Second Edition) ReviewI just finished reading Terry Orlick's new Cooperative Games and Sports book and loved it. The best thing about it was that the games and activities are designed to focus on the fun of playing together rather than the outcome. I have ordered 10 more copies of the book to give as gifts to my friends that have children.Cooperative Games and Sports, Joyful Activities for Everyone (Second Edition) Overview

My husband was truly surprised and very excited to have such a wonderful gift. Max Contraction Training : The Scientifically Proven Program for Building Muscle Mass in Minimum Time ReviewMax Contraction Training is John Little's follow up to the last book he wrote with Peter Sisco, 'Static Contraction Training'. Max Contraction Training contains some really good information and acts as a logical and worthy extension of the principles of high intensity training. However, the book is far from perfect and there are a number of problematic areas which Little does not satisfactorily address.
The early chapters of the book cover the underlying principles of strength training, and make it clear that the book is aimed at drug free people who want to follow an efficient and effective method of strength training founded on real scientific principles and research rather than the typical 'gym lore' and nonsense that gets published in the muscle magazines.
Little points out that he had been working on developing the 'Max Contraction' system before he teamed up with Peter Sisco to produce the 'Power Factor' and 'Static Contraction' systems and that he considers 'Max Contraction' to be the ultimate conclusion of the high intensity principles that underlie all the systems he has been involved with, which does kind of make you wonder why he didn't just publish this at the beginning and not bother with the other two.
He also goes in for a fair amount of repetition in getting the point about the position of full contraction being the only one in which all of a muscle's fibres can be forced to contract, and after a while this becomes a big of a drag. This is combined with a few mixed messages about safety which can become a bit confusing after a while. However, once you have figured out exactly what he is getting at you will find that the points he is raising are valid and contribute a great deal to your overall understanding of the science behind strength training.
The later chapters are concerned with the practicalities of training acoording to the scientific principles he has laid out. He gives a sound and well rounded basic routine to follow which is based around 'isolation' exercises (e.g. Leg Extensions and Leg Curls) which allow for the individual muscle or muscle group to enter a position of full ('Max') contraction and so activate all the muscle's fibres and utilise the full strength of the muscle. He then goes on to show you 'Bodypart Specialization' routines (e.g. Arms, Shoulders, Back, Legs) which clearly do not follow the principles he has laid out in the first part of the book as they entail doing more sets per bodypart rather than increasing the intensity of exercise.
Safety is also an issue, people who train on their own will be pretty much limited to using the weights that they can move into the position of full/'max' contraction on their own from full (or near full) extension for many of the exercises which, logically, reduces the effectiveness. What will really stick in the craw of many readers though, is that in selecting particular exercises he is clearly trying to get you to buy his 'Max Straps' which will only be available from his website, and will not be cheap either!
So, the book is deeply flawed, but also has some essential information that will do you a lot of good. I recommend that you first buy Little and Sisco's 'Static Contraction Training' and then use this to round out the picture. Where 'Static Contraction Training' focuses on compound exercises, this aims at isolation exercises. The two books and systems are complementary rather than competitive, and with some thought and common sense you can easily combine the best of the two books into a routine for yourself that makes the most of the equipment you have available to you.Max Contraction Training : The Scientifically Proven Program for Building Muscle Mass in Minimum Time Overview

Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story Review'Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story' is an enthralling account of the boxer's rise and fall. Peter Niels Heller's assiduous scholarship and precise analyses combine to create a portrait that is both compelling and frightening. Drawn into professional boxing at the age of 19, Tyson quickly established himself as the boxer to beat. No-one could. Ultimately, he defeated himself, being sentenced to six years in prison in 1992. However, rather than surrender to the nihilism of incarceration, Tyson fought back. As Heller says on page 126, 'He was on his personal canvas, the Celestial Referee was about to count 9, and then it happened; Tyson stood up, bowed but unbeaten. With renewed energy, he determined that he would change; become a better person. The miracle had begun, and within a month he was working on a lathe in the carpentry shop, turning himself into a model prisoner first, a fruit bowl second and finally an elaborate rocking horse. So impressed were the authorities that they gave the boxer early release and a free white ant inspection.'
These days, Tyson continues to be an ornament, proudly positioned on Don King's mantlepiece.Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story Overview

FireHouse ReviewAfter reading and for the most part enjoying Snodgrass Vacation by the same author, I thought I'd give another of his books a try. It took a bit to settle into the story (going from slapdash comedy to serious attempt at portraying teenage life in high school is sort of a big switch on my end).
The story focuses on Zach, a former druggie who sings lead for a small-time band while also wrestling. Both groups apply pressure for their activity to be the main focus in Zach's life. The band treats him like friends, but their lifestyle is ragged, nights full of partying, grungy hair, and a total disregard for school and safety. With wrestling, he has no friends, but enjoys the same thrill stepping onto the mat as he does standing before a crowd with a microphone.
The first problem of the story is that much of Zach's change, from grunge to wrestler, has already happened by the time we meet him. He's quit smoking and drinking to make sure he meets his weigh-ins and doesn't "gas out" in the middle of matches. I would have liked to have been there when the clash between Wrestling and Rock weren't just about time schedules and dual-booking, but actual, physical decisions carrying far greater consequences for his health and life.
It also doesn't help that Zach comes across as a jerk. Yes, he's a loaner, and lacks self-esteem, and the author portrays him as a jerk on purpose...but that still means he's a jerk. It takes a bit to warm up to him. The wrestling matches help with that.
I was unsure just how much I'd enjoy this book for the first quarter or so. After a few of the meets, however, I was hooked. I found myself caring how well Zach did with every match. He never acted like his life depended on the win, but his opinion of himself, and the effort he was putting into the sport, did. Even better, the author rarely made the outcome of the event clear prior to the wrestle, having Zach lose as much as he won. By halfway through, I was enthralled with each meet, cheering him on in my head. It is very much a redemptive story in this matter, and I found myself flying through the story.
The wrestling matches are full of technical detail, any wrestling aficionados should find this both comfortable and familiar, but those who don't know the difference between a firehouse carry and a full nelson might be left scratching their heads.
The worst problem, though, was in the final fourth of the book. Both Zach's performances in singing and wrestling were always in doubt before every gig and match, but by the end, that uncertainty was gone. The feel-good-ending was kicking in, and it seemed the author didn't have the guts, or the desire, to have it break away into something more. His reliance on friends was touching, but it also seemed to overwhelm any real need to choose between his two loves.
Overall, I'd give this 3 and 1/2 stars. Since I can't rate it that here on Amazon, tie goes to the author, hence the 4. I will add that while nothing in the story ever reached a sense of urgency or worry, I flew through this book far faster than I normally read. I sat down at 50% and read all the way to the end in one sitting. The author's writing style is rather plain, but at the same time, this leads to a very smooth, uninterrupted reading. There's no ego or self-indulgence, just a tale told earnestly and truthfully as possible.FireHouse Overview

Hard Luck: The Triumph and Tragedy of "Irish" Jerry Quarry ReviewAny boxing fan who lived through the 1960's and 1970's will never forget heavyweight boxer Jerry Quarry. Any boxing fan regardless of their age, or what generation of boxing they lived through... should know about Jerry Quarry. Quarry was without a doubt one of the best heavyweights who never won the championship. The time period that encompassed Jerry's career... just may have included the most talented overall bunch of heavyweights active at one time in history. And as the reader will find out... Jerry is probably the only one who didn't shy away from fighting these behemoth bombers. Before I go any further in this review... my opening statements can easily be confirmed by no greater an authority than former Heavyweight Champ and master-blaster George Foreman. Big George states in the foreword he so graciously wrote for this super-well-documented Quarry biography: "JERRY QUARRY WAS THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHTER NEVER TO HAVE A CHAMPIONSHIP BELT. WHEN I BECAME HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, I DODGED HIM PURPOSELY."
In hindsight... what can rightfully be called "The Golden Age Of Heavyweights" Jerry fought at least FIVE DIFFERENT MEN WHO AT SOME POINT WERE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONS! Jerry's opponents included among others, MUHAMMAD ALI (TWICE), SMOKIN' JOE FRAZIER, KEN NORTON, RON LYLE, EARNIE SHAVERS, MAC FOSTER, FLOYD PATTERSON, THAD SPENCER, JIMMY ELLIS AND GEORGE CHUVALO. Many of these fighters were avoided by other fighters by any means necessary. Jerry never avoided anyone... and he always came to fight.
I grew up in Southern California during the Quarry years... and I even went to some fights with my boxing loving Dad, and yet I still learned an awful lot of behind the scenes information about the Quarry clan. The reader will learn about his tough as nails Father, Jack... who was the epitome of a relentless-street-fighting-give-no-quarter-depression-era-grapes-of-wrath-hardass. He had all his sons boxing each other from an early age. That included younger brother Mike who wound up fighting for the Light Heavyweight Championship and getting knocked into outer space by one of the greatest Light Heavyweight Champions of all-time, Bob Foster. One of the most surprising things I learned was how even as professional fighters, Jack had Jerry and Mike spar against each other in such no-holds-barred battle royals... that other professional boxers almost couldn't bear to watch. And if that wasn't bad enough... many times they both fought each other without headgear. Many believe that is one of the reasons they both wound up dying from dementia pugilistica.
The author provides a wonderfully detailed roadmap of Jerry being a great athlete in high school who ran the 100 yard dash in 9.9 seconds (That blew me away... a heavyweight boxer with that type of speed!) through his Golden Glove years and on through the pro's. A local Los Angeles fight favorite with his original home base the famed Olympic Auditorium (Where my Dad and I went.)... and then the biggest stage of them all... *MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN NEW YORK*. Among others, Jerry fought Muhammad Ali there in his now infamous first bout back after his refusing the military draft. Jerry was thrown into a role that he never liked... that of *THE GREAT WHITE HOPE*. Jerry never backed down in any fight regardless of the outcome. From a job changing tires on Greyhound busses to being close personal friends with *ELVIS*, Jerry... just like "THE KING" loved his Mother more than anything else, and always took care of her.
The reader will have no punches pulled, as Quarry starts drinking... doing drugs... and starts to rapidly decline... almost assuredly from all the blows to the head he received... as he never stepped backwards... whether in victory or defeat. The end is exceedingly sad... and is like a modern day "REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT". The author at times goes overboard with his metaphors and analogies, such as: "AT THE END OF THE ROUND, JERRY HAD FINALLY FORCED ALI TO TASTE WHAT HE HAD IN THE KITCHEN, BUT IT WAS OBVIOUS ALI HAD A RAVENOUS APPETITE THAT JERRY COULD NOT SATE." Or, "JERRY HUNGERED FOR ANOTHER TITLE SHOT, JACK THREW HIM A STEAK, BUT IT WAS AS TOUGH AS HELL. THE STEAK WENT BY THE NAME OF "SMOKIN" JOE FRAZIER. A GUY COULD LOSE A MOLAR OR TWO BITING INTO THAT GRADE OF MEAT." And, "FRAZIER STAYED ON QUARRY LIKE A COUCH ON A FURNITURE DELIVERYMAN'S BACK." At first you think it was just a coincidence... but then you think it may be an inside tongue-in-cheek-joke... but by the end you just don't know.
Either way, the author did a great job and really defined this tough as nails boxer to the "T", including when "IN 1995 DR. PETER RUSSELL, JERRY'S NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST DURING THIS PERIOD STATED, "JERRY QUARRY'S BRAIN LOOKS LIKE THE INSIDE OF A GRAPEFRUIT THAT HAS BEEN DROPPED DOZENS OF TIMES."
Jerry always loved his fans... and we still love you Jerry.

Fall River Dreams: A Team's Quest for Glory, A Town's Search for Its Soul ReviewFall River Dreams was one of those books you wished would never end! I became immersed in this book, as these characters become a part of you.The star player, living in his brothers'shadow, and the pressure of living up to his legacy of bringing home a state championship. The coach,a legend himself in his hometown, trying to go out with one more championship, and dealing with this 'new breed'of kids. The players, the benchwarmers, and those who seek their own moment of glory. And lastly, the town, that has once seen better days,as it struggles with it's existence all while pinning it's hopes on a High School basketball team, to make it feel that the town still has it's pride, along with their passion for the game! I compare this book to the excellent "Hoop Dreams",as that you both feel for their characters, and find yourself rooting for them. Much has happened to the main character, Chris Herren, from the time Fall River Dreams ends, to the start of his rookie season with the Denver Nuggets. I won't reveal them here. The are documented in excellent articles in author Bill Reynolds column in The Providence Journal. I'm hoping that Mr.Reynolds continues telling us more, with a sequel of the team and the town that captured my heart, soul and passion of hometown sports! Ball Don't Lie Review"I could tell you a lot about this game....
"How a dark gym like Lincoln Rec is a different world. Full of theft and dunk, smooth jumpers and fragile egos. Full of its own funky politics and stratification. Music bleeding out of old rattling speakers from open to close. Old rhythm and blues. Stevie Wonder. Aretha Franklin. Funk. Motown. Marvin Gaye. Sometimes Jimmy gets talked into hard-core rap on weekends. Or Trey sneaks in his three-year-old demo tape.
"Always music.
"There are fat rats that scurry through the lane on game point. Beady eyes on the man with the ball. There are roaches congregating under the bleachers.
"There is so much dust on the slick floor that sometimes guys will go to stop and slide right out of the gym. Every time there's a break in the action, ten guys put palm to sole for grip.
"There are a hundred different ways of talking and a thousand uses of the word motherf____r.
"There are no women.
"In the winter there are so many homeless bodies spread out across court two you can hardly see the floor. There are leaks when it rains. Rusted pots are set out to collect heavy drops. Sometimes a guy will track in mud and everybody throws a fit. Jimmy sets out a twenty-five-dollar heater and everybody puts their hands up to it before they play."
Court one at Lincoln Rec is the epicenter of Sticky's life in L.A. and of his dreams for the future. Lincoln Rec is a constant for him, a positive one, unlike that series of light-colored minivans that have repeatedly arrived at the group home over the years carrying foster parents who pick him up, make him big promises about a real home...promises that for various reasons always go up in smoke and leave him, once again, chillin' back at the group home.
Court one is where he, a seventeen-year-old white boy, builds his skills playing an extremely physical style of pickup basketball with an assortment of tough, older black guys. On court one, where either you are seriously in the zone or you're spending all day with your butt in the bleachers, Sticky is determined to play and win.
As Dante, a former pro player and a regular at Lincoln Rec explains to him, Sticky has started the "life being a race" thing "three stones back." Not only has Sticky had to deal with the failings of his drug-addicted, prostitute mother and, later, with those repeated rejections by foster parents, but he also has "that mental thing, where you gotta do stupid stuff over and over and over." The depictions of Sticky's frequent ritualistic behaviors, revealing his struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, are agonizing. But, ironically, it is that same compulsion that keeps him so focused on constantly perfecting his skills, whether they be related to basketball or to other, less noble, pursuits.
"Won't you help me girl
Just as soon as you can?"
--Al Green
There's the bright high school girl with the beautiful green eyes, Anh-thu, who works in Miller's Outpost. Sticky meets her one day when he drops in there to steal some new pants. "Annie" seems able to see through the hard shell to the real Sticky.
The story bounces back and forth from Lincoln Rec to scenes of Sticky's early days with his mother, the different experiences with foster families, playing J.V. hoops at school, hanging out partying with the guys, and being with Anh-thu. All together, there must be a hundred different characters we meet, and each one is unique and memorable. A number of those characters are homeless, some sleeping on cardboard on court two, others in a public toilet somewhere. Sticky's world is on the underbelly side of L.A. And regularly we get glimpses of the "other world" in the form of faceless businessmen who come walking in on their lunch break to watch what's going on and then return to their offices to tell their co-workers about the games, the fights, and, undoubtedly, about the skinny white kid with the moves.
"Rob's weight is on the back of his heels on defense. Waiting.
"The face rattles off truth in situations like this. Fear flickering in Rob's wide eyes: Get too close and Sticky sticks a jumper in his eye. Too many possibilities when the man with the ball gets to say which way and when, how fast and for how long. And you can multiply all that by ten if the guy can play. Get busted on in front of everybody. Get dragged all game by the skinny white kid everybody talks about.
"All the loudmouths on the sideline are at full attention.
"Sticky jab-steps right and pulls back, keeps his dribble.
"Rob retreats.
"Sticky is: through the legs, around the back, playing hoops with a yo-yo. Walk the dawg when everybody calls for a trick. Hold the ball too long.
"He is: stolen Nike shoes, stolen mesh shorts, ankle socks. Back and forth handling the ball, knees bent, his eyes in Rob's eyes. Piss off the old purists who cry for a return to fundamentals. The ones who've lost so much vision they're blind to the dance of it all. The spin move like a skirt lifting pirouette on callaused toes. The dip. Jump shot splashing through the net like a perfect dismount."
A damaged white teenager, a bunch of tough black "ballers," a dark rec center in L.A., and the girl with the eyes come together to make this gritty, urban story a powerful, rhythmic read. The thrumming beats and the sweat dripping out from between the pages also place author Matt de la Pena squarely in contention for Rookie of the Year honors.
You'll see this on my Best of 2005 list later this year.

Becoming a Personal Trainer For Dummies ReviewI have been a personal trainer for nearly two years and I thought I had a handle on everything. I was given this book as a gift and I was blown away with the comprehensive information that it provides. I learned the most from the True Stories sections as they provided extra tips and really expanded upon the knowledge contained in this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about becoming a personal trainer and encourage current personal trainers to read it as well. I only wish I would have read this book a lot sooner.Becoming a Personal Trainer For Dummies Overview

Cycling Anatomy (Sports Anatomy) ReviewThis book is an excellent reference for cyclists looking to add strength training to their routines. It is very well organized into sections showing the different sections of the body the exercises are for. Each exercise itself is documented to show you exactly what it will be working and how it helps your cycling form. It also shows you variations of each exercise which are often easier versions of the original exercise.
The one area that could possibly be improved on is that it does not have a section that really gives you a workout program and the author calls this out in the first chapter and that the goal of the book is to help show you proper exercises and how to do them. This is good, but I find that, for beginners it might be helpful to have a small section showing how to use all these exercises in a routine to get maximum benefit. It is important to note that I said "for beginners" in that last sentence since this book is really for more advanced cyclists and as such the missing prescribed workouts section is not something I really miss that much. Personally I am looking at using these in a hybrid/modified version of the P-90X program combined with the The Cyclist's Training Bible
Buy this if you are a cyclist looking on taking your training up a notch. Particularly if you are looking to add exercises you can do in a gym, off the road, out of the dark in a season like the winter.
Don't buy this if you are a beginner looking for a book to help you get started in cycling or to get started on training a bit more seriously since this book is aimed at more serious cyclists.Cycling Anatomy (Sports Anatomy) Overview

Beyond Brawn: The Insider's Encyclopedia on How to Build Muscle and Might ReviewAt just under 500 pages, BEYOND BRAWN is, bar none, THE most comprehensive book I've ever read on the topic of bodybuilding, and I¹ve read several hundred books.
BEYOND BRAWN is written in very non-technical language. With 22 total chapters, no aspect of productive weight-training has been overlooked. Section 1 is entitled "Establishing a secure foundation" and discusses general information of value for those who are embarking upon the goal of adding muscle mass.
Section 2 is the real meat of the book and is entitled "How to train." At almost 200 pages, Stuart has left no topic uncovered with regards to safe and productive training. Topics include setting up a training cycle, exercise intensity, exercise selection and technique, intensity cycling, personalizing your program, overtraining, and others. Only topics of true importance to the average trainee are discussed in this book. Unlike most bodybuilding books, which are no more than simple fluff, BEYOND BRAWN actually accomplishes the goal of providing tons of useful, no-nonsense information for genetically average trainees who want to increase their strength and size. BEYOND BRAWN is not an overly dogmatical tome which espouses a single way of training for everyone. It presents numerous interpretations in terms of set and rep goals, length of a cycle, training intensity, and exercise selection, to accommodate needs of all types of trainees. Ultimately, I guess the best thing I can say about it, repeating from above is this: "BEYOND BRAWN is, without a doubt, THE most comprehensive book ever written on the topic of strength training and bodybuilding for the genetically average individual." And, again, keep in mind that that statement comes from a guy who¹s read several hundred books on the topic of strength training in the past ten years. So my endorsement does not come lightly.Beyond Brawn: The Insider's Encyclopedia on How to Build Muscle and Might Overview

One Ring Circus: Dispatches from the World of Boxing ReviewKatherine Dunn is a boxer's writer. Unlike many literary types who pursue the sport as a overwrought metaphor, titillation, or slumming with the lower classes, Dunn truly understands and appreciates boxing. She has spent decades learning the sport, from the coaches to the fighters themselves. She sees the gentleness that can exist behind the gloves, the contractions of the ring, and the uncertainty of a sport that remains entrenched in another time. To have a writer of her skill translate such a sport is a rare experience. One Ring Circus: Dispatches from the World of Boxing Overview

Payback Time ReviewThis book sounded really good from the write up on it. It has a little mystery and intrigue in the high school sport area. I really liked the start of the book and could relate to Mitch (danny). The story gets really good as Mitch and Kimi try to figure out just who Angel is and where he came from.
The story at the end just falls flat and ends very abruptly. It finishes so fast that you feel like you missed alot about what exactly happened and you want to read more about the characters and their lives.Payback Time Overview

The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised ReviewThis book is exactly what it says it is- an encyclopedia. It is divided into no less than five "books." Measuring in at about one and a half inches thick, if the info contained inside doesn't help you get bigger, just try lifting the book!
A quick rundown of each chapter. The first book is basically an introduction to bodybuilding, covering a lot of miscellaneous, but important topics. The second book covers the training programs, the third the body part exercises, and the fourth book competing. The fifth and last book covers nutrition and diets.
As you can tell, there's really only one word to describe this book- comprehensive. Would have liked to see a little more on injuries, for example there only about a half page on shoulder injuries, but then again this isn't exactly a sports medicine book either. Those who just want big arms might also want to check out Smokin' Hot Guns!!: How an Average Guy Can Get Big, Muscular Arms In One Workout A Week. The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised Overview
