Iron Nation ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed this book as it validated all the hard training stories I heard my dad talk about. He wrote a chapter in the book about how it was possible to build muscle without shiny chrome and fancy equipment (Glenn Pieschke). I watched him cross train five days a week his entire life, for over forty years while the pro's have come and gone and died from steroid abuse. This book defines good solid principles, no hype or BS, or fast schemes that don't work. You get what you put into it and your workouts. I follow many of the principles outlined in the book including living a healthy lifestyle and diet. At 18, I'm just starting 'my exercise for life career' and am thankful for the honest info provided in a book like this. Thank goodness theres real information like this out there.Iron Nation Overview

Training for Mass, Second Edition ReviewI'm a pretty big fan of the first book, so I was curious about what would be different with the 2nd edition. What I like is that there's more detail about the finer points of actual training. Beforehand I still had a few questions about reps, like how many are ideal, and about how things like rest-pause are supposed to work. This book spends a lot more time going over this. The first book was mostly about selling the idea of low volume, high intensity training. The second also gives a better description of the logic behind that, but the real changes are in training specifics. I also like that the book has a new part listing all the main points of how to train and why, followed by a section listing the opposite...training myths.
The chapter about injury seemed to be expanded a lot, and I have to say that it's a lot more powerful now that there's an actual list of famous bodybuilders who tore muscles. That's another change from the first that I like...that before the author would mention unnamed people in bodybuilding, regarding bad advice, etc. In this book he also mentions specifically who a couple of these people are and what they have to say. I think this is important, because there's a lot of terrible advice coming from bodybuilders. These people need to be called on it.
Like the first book, there's no pictures, which I like. The author in the intro complains that it's kind of an insult to your intelligence when a bodybuilding book is filled with pictures, with not a lot of info. I agree with this. I'd say this is definitely worth picking up, even if you have the original.Training for Mass, Second Edition Overview

The Wisdom of Mike Mentzer: The Art, Science and Philosophy of a Bodybuilding Legend ReviewBeing a fan of Mentzer, I was eager to read this. He does stand as someone I truly have admired in my life time. I have enjoyed his other books and always came away better for reading them. However, I was very disapointed in this book. I soon realised that the problem is it was not written by Mentzer. The first half of the book is honestly just a little too reverent in painting Mentzer as a hero. I admire him, but John Little makes him sound like a saint. It's just a little much. The second half improved as it delved into Mentzer's philosophy on training using many of his own quotes. But even here, John Little refers to his previous book so blatantly and repeatedly, he often sounds like a broken record. It was a shameless redundant self promotion that almost makes one question his sincerity.
My advice, this is just fluff and promotion. Go buy one of Mentzer's books such as Heavy Duty as it is eye opening. Mentzer was a prolific writer and had a such a keen sense of logic that made the other books such as pleasure to read. This feels like a somewhat goulish attempt by those that have survived him, to use his name and drain one last bit from his devout fans. The Wisdom of Mike Mentzer: The Art, Science and Philosophy of a Bodybuilding Legend Overview

High-Intensity Training the Mike Mentzer Way ReviewI was first introduced to the concept of high intensity training by Mike's articles in Iron Man magazine in the early 90's. For the first time ever, I began to see consistent, noticable improvements on a workout to workout basis, initially gaining over 25 pounds of muscle over a period of only a few months. I eventually became certified as a personal trainer by the SuperSlow Exercise Guild, who also advocate a high intensity training (HIT) protocol similar to Mike's, the only major difference being the use of a slower rep cadence which provides for a lower risk of injuries. Having trained hundreds of clients using HIT since 1994, I can say with absolute confidence that it is by far the safest, most productive, and most time efficient way to train. Whatever is in second place is so far behind as to not even be in the running.
HIT is not, as some reviewers have erroneously stated, conducive to injuries, so long as the exercises are performed properly - that is, using strict form and a smooth, controlled speed of movement. Lift the weights slowly and under strict control, and reverse direction smoothly, rather than simply swinging, bouncing or throwing them up and then allowing them to drop the way most people do in the gym. It isn't the amount of weight that causes injuries, but the manner in which one attempts to lift it. HIT is perfectly safe if the exercises are performed properly. Mike addresses this issue in the book.
HIT does happen to be the "be all, end all" of exercise. There can only be one best, one most efficient, one most effective means of accomplishing a particular goal, and where exercise is concerned, this is it. The principles of productive exercise are the same for all of us, it is merely the specifics that must be adjusted for individual differences, which is accounted for in HIT theory, and in Mike's books. Even if another training method produced similar results, if it required you to spend a greater amount of time in the gym it could still not be considered equal, since the return on investment would be lower. For those who's social lives revolve around the gym or who are stuck in their ways, this may take some getting used to. Personally, I'd rather spend only as much time in the gym as necessary to get the best results. The purpose of exercise is to improve the quality of your life, and NOT to be the center of it.
Get in the gym, train hard, then get out and enjoy your life.
This is the most thorough of all of Mike's books. It covers all of the principles of his Heavy Duty high intensity training system in detail, and provides routines and explanations of the performance of various exercises. There is a section with information specifically written for the competitive bodybuilder on peaking, definition and posing. Mike also discusses his views on motivation in the gym, which I believe many will benefit from.High-Intensity Training the Mike Mentzer Way Overview
