Buff Dad: The 4-Week Fitness Game Plan for Real Guys ReviewBuff Dad has good basic advice; identifying foods to eat and foods to avoid, and a little explanation about why. Some of the recipes sound awful, although I haven't tried any of them. It has lots of motivational, cheerleader type exhortations pitched at the ordinary Dad with a few pounds to lose. The photos of the author demonstrating the exercises are good, but limited and repetitive. In fact, everything here is repeated at least several times. The 280 pages could easily have been 50-60. But, that's a quibble since the price is right and the messages are clearly delivered.Buff Dad: The 4-Week Fitness Game Plan for Real Guys Overview

Bottoms Up ReviewI have struggled with my weight all my life, especially since I turned 40. For three years, I religiously used a Nordic Track-- 5 days a week for 40 minutes--and it still did NOT change my body shape like this book did in three months! Vedral is so right. Put on the muscle and watch your metabolism change! Without consciously going on a diet, I lost 30 pounds. You can forget weighing yourself. Measure progress through the inches that disappear and then go shopping for beautiful sexy new clothes! At one point, I actually GAINED weight but LOST two dress sizes! Who cares what the scale says when your legs look great in a mini-skirt? Who cares what the scale says when you can sleep like a baby at night? Do this workout and your clothes will start hanging on you in a matter of weeks, even if you don't change your diet.
Forget the tempting Info Commercials with all those expensive gadgets, gizmos and pills. You don't need to waste your hard-earned money on a space-hogging Nordic Track, Total Gym or Susanne Sommer's Ab machine. I have tried it ALL and bought hundreds of dollars of worthless stuff that ultimately didn't work. NONE could do what this book did for me! (Example: I tried the Total Gym and found it very disrupting to have to stop and change the mechanical setup from exercise to exercise. I tried the Ab machine and it was awkward and boring.)
All you need with Vedral's workouts are some hand-weights and a simple exercise bench that you can fold up and slide under the bed. You can pick these up cheaply at any yard sale. Don't fall for the unhealthy fad diets and the " fat buster" pills that only make your wallet thinner. Vedral says the truth. There are no shortcuts. If you want to stay healthy, vital and beautiful you gotta exercise and eat right.
The hardest part is to START exercising. Once you start this workout, it is almost EASY to begin to eat right. When you work so hard, you are automatically motivated to stop eating fatty foods. When you give your body what it needs, the destructive cravings for unhealthy foods begins to vanish. It's almost magical. Your body wakes you up, and says, "Hey, listen to me now. I don't want that soda, give me fresh juice... I don't want that ice cream, give me a slice of watermelon instead." Your bad cravings STOP, your colon is stimulated, waste moves faster out of your system, and your skin begins to glow with health. When you exercise first for your health, the weight automatically does down. It's miraculous.
Something AMAZING happens to your body AND mind when you start to work out with weights. Your posture changes and you feel deeply connected at the core. Not only will you slim down and become firm and shapely, but you will gain an almost spiritual sense of what I can only call "centering," a kind of inner balance... like one sees in martial artists.
I DO suggest that you go slowly and DO NOT try and keep up with the instructions in the book. Even you are already exercising, you will be surprised at what this workout will do. Start with one set of exercise (not three) until you are comfortable, then add another set for a couple of weeks, then the third set after a month or more. Use very small weights in the beginning. I jumped right in with 10 lb. weights and did it all vigorously the first day and was so sore I couldn't move for a week. Dumb. Go slowly and gently and you will be up to target at your OWN speed. It doesn't matter HOW long it takes. You may feel like you have two left feet, but don't give up. After a couple of weeks, it gets SO much easier. This workout is good for anyone from teenager to senior citizen.
My only criticism (and it is an important one) is that the book SHOULD have some stretching warm-up and especially a cool-down to stretch out the muscles at the end. She has said that these ARE included in the Bottoms Up video, so I am glad to hear that. If you want to use the book only, be sure to do some basic stretching out at the end. Once you get good at it and don't rest between sets, you will find that the Lower Body part of this workout is strenuous enough to keep your heart rate up and give a decent aerobic workout too.
I originally bought this book because I admire the gutsy, no-nonsense, compassionate author. Vedral is a model of American rags to riches and her Bio is inspirational and heartwarming. She now has a website where you can buy her exercise videos (they're not here on Amazon.) I just ordered The Fat-Burning Workout Video Vol 1 and the set of 3 Definition: Upper, Middle and Lower Body Workout Videos and can't wait to get them! She also has 6 different inspirational audio cassettes to motivate you even more. (I ordered all six.) Check out the Before and After pics too!... LOVE yourself. Buy this book. You are worth it!Bottoms Up Overview

Strong Kids, Healthy Kids: The Revolutionary Program for Increasing Your Child's Fitness in 30 Minutes a Week ReviewFred has done an extraordinary thing in this book. He has forever destroyed the myth that strength training for kids is dangerous and unproductive. Using the scientific literature, Fred shows how strength training can benefit children by making them stronger, and how it is the best way to favorably alter body composition in kids. The middle section teaches how to perform proper strength training in any setting available such as home, school or the gym. Finally, Fred attacks the myth of the contemporary food pyramid by providing a healthy food plan (not a diet) that provides the healthiest food choices that kids will love. This book is a must read for any parent and should be the manual for every physical education class in this country. Bravo Fred!

Pace: The 12-Minute Fitness Revolution (Exercise Workout Books) ReviewMost of the reviews written here are far more concise, clear, and well presented than this book. I totally agree with the comment that says this book could easily be a third of its size because that is all the content there actually is and I'm being generous. The book is like an infomercial in that it harps over and over and over and over and over again about the amazing benefits of this program to the detriment of the actual content. He could have started with one chapter or even two in the beginning which "sells" the reader on the program and then actually got down to the meat of subject. Instead the book is very poorly organized, nearly impossible to understand, and practically a waste of time. It took me far too long to pull the bits out that actually explain the program because they aren't in any logical order and are separated by more schmaltzy infomercial talk.
Look, I've got the book, I'm very interested in the program, when the heck are you going to stop trying to sell me on it?
Once you pull out the bits actually pertaining to how to USE the program in your life I felt that there were many questions that remained unanswered and things he should have gone over. In the end he throws in a quick bit about some calisthenics that he suggest you do, but doesn't explain how they fit into the program. Do I do these as a part of the program? Do I do them separately? What about people with injuries? What about people who want to build back up strength and flexibility as well? I do think that this program is the right track, but the book is simply awful. I returned mine to his company for a refund partially because it was not worth the money and didn't tell me anything you can't find about his program on the internet and partially because it is MUCH cheaper on Amazon. If you want to start the program I suggest you get the book from the library and skim to the few parts that actually matter.
I don't understand how this book got published without an Editor or advisor or anyone looking at it and saying "Wow, we can cut out 90% of this garbage" and maybe even add some more real information.
For those of you actually using the system what did you do about the calisthenics?

28-Day Body Shapeover ReviewI have just finished my third week on this program and I'm really happy with the results. I've lost five pounds on the scale, but more importantly my body feels toner and my clothes fit better. The book is very easy to follow. It has separate pages for each of the 28 days of the program with exactly what you are supposed to eat and exercise. There are home workouts provided but I take this to the gym with me. It makes it really easy to just go through the workout knowing the exact routine. I really like the exercise descriptions which are clear and with good pictures to show exactly what you need to do. I'm excited to keep using this over the coming months. My goal is to lose a total of 20 pounds and get really toned for summer!

The last part of the book has a Q&A section that helps the reader in understanding and preventing injuries and how they occure. The 10-Minute Total Body Breakthrough ReviewScience is proving that the human body is designed to function in short bursts of activity --- not one long marathon of running or the other forms of activity we've been participating in for decades through our exercise programs.
Studies show that ten minutes of brisk exercise triggers metabolic changes that last at least an hour.
Aerobics as we know it is dead. And long sessions of weight lifting are not the answer. This book has one answer. And I just love it. I bet you will too.
I adopted this style of working out a few months ago. My blood pressure is lower, I'm in better health and have more energy. Plus, I'm having more fun when I workout.
Several books have come out in the last few years that address the fact that short bursts of exercise are superior to the long bouts of exercise most people partake of and are bored by.
They've provided us with attractive alternatives to the long, boring exercise routines. More than alternatives, these are superior ways to train for everyday life. They're also fun and make you feel great. This is a functional exercise program and that's the very best kind.
This book by Sean Foy adds something really special to the body of information on this exciting type of workout. He provides a way to get your . . .
Cardio
Strength training
Core work and
Stretching and breathing exercises
. . . in one fast ten minute session.
It breaks down to . . .
4 minutes of high-energy aerobic training
3 minutes of resistance exercise
2 minutes of core-strengthening exercises
1 minute of stretching and deep breathing
These are all broken down into short intervals, which gives you a really powerful workout.
Before you jump in, you need to read the book and run through the exercises. Why? Simply put, when you're doing the workouts, the transitions between one exercise and the next is zero! There's no stopping for ten minutes. And believe me, you'll know you had a workout when you're finished. I sure did. And I'm a seasoned exerciser.
There are a few things about the book I should bring up that I consider negatives. One of the exercises, the Wood Chopper, was not presented in the proper way. (At least not in the way I learned it or find it in all other literature and video instructions.) The resistance band is supposed to be overhead and you chop down. Foy tells you to put the band even with your waist and chop straight across.
I've searched all over and find no instructions saying to do the exercise this way. I don't think you get as much good from the exercise with the band at waist height. But perhaps he had a good reason for giving these instructions.
Also, there is a section on the science behind this type of program. But I felt it was not as in-depth as it should be. Having said that, there are other books with the science discussed in-depth and no one book can be expected to contain everything.
Foy also says you can do one circuit and then do one or more in addition to that if you want. To me, this is saying that ten minutes is good but if you do more, it's better. And that's not true. In fact, it defeats the purpose of the program. I sort of felt he was trying to please everyone --- those who love long exercise sessions and those who don't. But that was only the feeling I got and I certainly have nothing to back that up other than the above statement he made.
The purpose of this workout to me is not in doing what's convenient but what's best, what's proven by science to be best.
I felt that his motive was to get people moving and he rightly surmised that anyone can put in ten minutes of exercise each day. And I applaud anyone who motivates people and gets them moving. But the real value in this program is the fact it's circuit/interval training --- the best type of exercise you can do. And that it's done in a sprint --- the way we live and function.
The exciting thing about this book, other than the program, is the book itself. By that I mean the way the book is designed. Whoever designed it, did so with the reader (exerciser) in mind. In fact, every exercise book should be made this way. Let me explain.
The book is spiral bound. So it lays down flat. This means you can easily practice the exercises and study them. But, it goes further. Every spiral bound book I've had has only the wired spiral visible when you put it in a shelf. This book cleaverly put an identifying spine over the wires so it closes like any other book and when shelved, you can easily find the book. It looks like any other book and hides the wired spiral.
The great design continues at the end. There are fantastic exercise cards for each level. Each card shows the exercise you do and tells you how to do it.
You can mix and match them and lay the book out so it's ready for you in the morning. This is about the coolest thing I've seen in a long time and I love using it. No more breaking the spines of books so it lays flat and no more fingering around in a book trying to locate your exercises. It's all so convenient. Kudos to the designer! That's a BIG part of the value of this book.
The book also tells you exactly how long each exercise is. I set the interval timer on my watch and it really made it fun and easy. Well, easy as far as knowing how I was doing on my time. The exercises are no walk in the park! You'll sweat --- so have a fan and water at the ready.
And I did get my heart rate up. Not as high as when I'm doing P.A.C.E. but respectably high. Foy doesn't really address raising the heart rate to the extent Al Sears does in his book. I don't think he considers that a major issue in quite the same way or perhaps he figures you can get that sort of workout on your other three days.
Foy suggests you do the 4-3-2-1 Program three times a week and some other ten minute exercises for three days. I do the P.A.C.E. Program because I believe so strongly in it and it helps strengthen the heart. Between both programs, I firmly believe a person can lower his blood pressure, his weight, cholesterol, triglycerides PLUS lose weight and feel great!
About a Few Negatives . . .
I would prefer the author refrain from giving little tips about how to live your life and deal with personal relationships. Having said that, he does say he's an "exercise physiologist and behavioral and nutritional coach." So, I guess some people might enjoy and benefit from his advice in this area.
I'd prefer to get that information elsewhere. When I get a fitness book, I want to read about fitness --- nothing else. In the forward, Dr. William Sears says, "Another thing I especially like about this book is that it focuses on not only a makeover of the body but of the mind. You will enjoy the voice of Sean the marriage and family counselor as he explains that relationship fitness is like physical fitness --- if you don't work to build it, it atrophies."
I simply don't like reading this sort of thing in my fitness books. You may.
Also, I wish the book had an index. This type of book --- one you refer to often --- should have one. That, coupled with a spelling error and some problems I had with one or two exercise instructions, plus not giving instructions for the breathing exercises, were negatives.
He also said that ice cream was "high on the glycemic index." That's a half-truth. Experts give ice cream the yellow light --- in moderation of course. It has a low GL (glycemic load) of 8. It has a moderately-high GI but experts are now putting more emphasis on the GL and the combination of the GI and GL. That gives ice cream a medium rating. In fact, low fat ice cream is considered low GI.
I also wasn't sure if you are supposed to warm up before the first moderate interval or before you begin the program. I didn't see any information on that. I saw one or two sentences that seemed to say the warm-up was incorporated in the first moderate interval. But, that's not long enough. So I warmed up two minutes before starting the program.
Foy says to warm up from two to five minutes --- he just isn't clear whether to do it prior to starting the intervals or during.
I have to add something else related to the book that I have an issue with. I personally find it improper for one of the co-authors to write a five-star review for a book she has a vested interest in. While her information is useful, the place for it is above in the description area that's specifically for the author. The review section is for the reader, not the authors or publishers.
I ordinarily would have taken off one star from my review due to these things. But I find the book of such tremendous value that I feel it deserves five stars despite the above issues.
The book is an absolute must-read if you want to get in the best shape of your life in the shortest time.
To read about the science behind this type of workout and get more information you'll find useful, I recommend Body by Science: A Research Based Program to Get the Results You Want in 12 Minutes a Week and Pace: The 12-Minute Fitness Revolution.
You won't regret getting this book. In fact, it may be just what you've been looking for if you want to get healthy and look great.
Highly recommended.

The Fat-Burning Workout: From Fat to Firm in 24 Days ReviewIn 1993, I was fat, out of shape and somewhat hopeless. I had tried running, stair-stepping, and cycling to little avail. I would lose 5 to 10lbs and while my body was smaller, it really didn't look that much better. I was cardiovascularly fit but physically I seem to have little to show for the hours I spent sweating in the gym. In a desperate search for some real help, I found Joyce's book in a public library. It was a book that profoundly changed my life.
For a former couch potato and self-proclaimed nerd, this book was perfect for bringing me quickly up to speed on how to reshape and redesign the body I thought I was stuck with. Joyce described the importance of aerobics, good nutrition, and good form. Plus she made it simple enough to avoid intimidating a person as ignorant about fitness as I was. (Prior to her book, I had believed that if I lost weight once and then stopped working out the weight would never come back)
I liked the way she detailed a workable plan that wasn't overwhelming. The cheerful and informative way she wrote the book made it a text I relied on for years. I've loaned this book to friends and occasionally still reread it when I'm in a fitness slump. While I don't believe her claims of Fat to Firm in 24 days, I do believe in her high-rep low-weight superset routine. I now have a definition and shape that my friends (fit long before me)only dream of. Some of it is natural propensity but the other is Vedral's innovative technique.
Although it took me longer than her book claimed(I didn't follow the diet exactly) I did lose 30lbs and gained a lovely, symmetrical sturdy shape. I swear by her abdominal routine which defines my serratus lines.
My discovery of this book was a turning point in my life and I highly recommend it to anyone who's just starting out with fitness. It gives you an excellent fundamental knowledge and a results-producing plan. The Fat-Burning Workout: From Fat to Firm in 24 Days Overview

Max Contraction Training : The Scientifically Proven Program for Building Muscle Mass in Minimum Time ReviewMax Contraction Training is John Little's follow up to the last book he wrote with Peter Sisco, 'Static Contraction Training'. Max Contraction Training contains some really good information and acts as a logical and worthy extension of the principles of high intensity training. However, the book is far from perfect and there are a number of problematic areas which Little does not satisfactorily address.
The early chapters of the book cover the underlying principles of strength training, and make it clear that the book is aimed at drug free people who want to follow an efficient and effective method of strength training founded on real scientific principles and research rather than the typical 'gym lore' and nonsense that gets published in the muscle magazines.
Little points out that he had been working on developing the 'Max Contraction' system before he teamed up with Peter Sisco to produce the 'Power Factor' and 'Static Contraction' systems and that he considers 'Max Contraction' to be the ultimate conclusion of the high intensity principles that underlie all the systems he has been involved with, which does kind of make you wonder why he didn't just publish this at the beginning and not bother with the other two.
He also goes in for a fair amount of repetition in getting the point about the position of full contraction being the only one in which all of a muscle's fibres can be forced to contract, and after a while this becomes a big of a drag. This is combined with a few mixed messages about safety which can become a bit confusing after a while. However, once you have figured out exactly what he is getting at you will find that the points he is raising are valid and contribute a great deal to your overall understanding of the science behind strength training.
The later chapters are concerned with the practicalities of training acoording to the scientific principles he has laid out. He gives a sound and well rounded basic routine to follow which is based around 'isolation' exercises (e.g. Leg Extensions and Leg Curls) which allow for the individual muscle or muscle group to enter a position of full ('Max') contraction and so activate all the muscle's fibres and utilise the full strength of the muscle. He then goes on to show you 'Bodypart Specialization' routines (e.g. Arms, Shoulders, Back, Legs) which clearly do not follow the principles he has laid out in the first part of the book as they entail doing more sets per bodypart rather than increasing the intensity of exercise.
Safety is also an issue, people who train on their own will be pretty much limited to using the weights that they can move into the position of full/'max' contraction on their own from full (or near full) extension for many of the exercises which, logically, reduces the effectiveness. What will really stick in the craw of many readers though, is that in selecting particular exercises he is clearly trying to get you to buy his 'Max Straps' which will only be available from his website, and will not be cheap either!
So, the book is deeply flawed, but also has some essential information that will do you a lot of good. I recommend that you first buy Little and Sisco's 'Static Contraction Training' and then use this to round out the picture. Where 'Static Contraction Training' focuses on compound exercises, this aims at isolation exercises. The two books and systems are complementary rather than competitive, and with some thought and common sense you can easily combine the best of the two books into a routine for yourself that makes the most of the equipment you have available to you.Max Contraction Training : The Scientifically Proven Program for Building Muscle Mass in Minimum Time Overview

Is She Naturally Thin, or Disciplined Insider Secrets of the Sexy and Slim ReviewIn a word - GENUINE. Being thin is easy when you're 20, but these gals in their 40s, 50s and even 60s look fantastic! I loved the pictures and the stories of women who struggled to stay thin. Rather that touting one magic bullet, it shows there are at least 101 ways to be a skinny cat! There are some common themes, but each story is unique. Is She Naturally Thin, or Disciplined Insider Secrets of the Sexy and Slim Overview

The Complete Book of Butt and Legs ReviewThe Brungardt series of "Complete" Exercises finally gets around to covering lower body. It's nice to see a reference book that focuses on the most essential piece of a well-planned workout.
Legs (including Hamstrings, quads, and calves) are the thrust of this guide, and Brungardt certainly knows how to put together an excellent leg program, whether you are a novice or a pro. The Brungardt strategy is a sound 1-2-3 elevated program, guiding the reader from basic leg workouts up through some tough variations on the master of all weightlifting moves, the squat. The book takes a lot of time explaining the value of proper form in leg routines, which is essential for anyone looking to maintain a healthy back. Brungardt also spends a good deal of time explaining the importance of diet and cardio exercise to develope and tone some awesome legs.
The section on glute building is rather basic, but fits well with the material as most leg exercises involve the glutes, when done properly. Some individual focus on hyperextensions, among other exercises, give the reader some good tools if they want to add more of a glute building routine to their program.
I have found all of the Brungardts books to be a valuable guide for enforcing proper form, and getting some solid motivational advice (they always stress the importance of bringing the nind into the exercise, which is overlooked in most of today's exercise manuals). And it is nice to see legs get a book all their own - if you are like me, and know how valuable a good leg routine is to your workout, you'll appreciate the advice dispensed in this book. Of course, most gym rats won't be interested in a book that ignores the "pecs and guns" mentality that is so prevalent today in the gym. That's a shame, because this book is a great reminder of how lower body affects, and helps build a solid upper body as wellThe Complete Book of Butt and Legs Overview

Fundamental Weight Training (Sports Fundamentals Series) ReviewFundamental Weight Training is a wonderful book for those new or inexperienced with resistance training and who are looking for an introductory and basics book not filled with pictures of over-muscled gym monsters or picture-perfect models. With 102 exercises, each with photos and detailed explanations, this book demystifies any misconceptions the reader may have about lifting a little iron.
The first few chapters introduce some of the basics of weight training, including the types of resistance training, gym protocol, language, and beginning stretches. The bulk of the book then devotes a chapter to each of the general body parts, i.e., chest, back, legs, glutes, etc. etc. Finally, to round things out, the book offers up sample programs and routines and also encourages the student to develop their own program based on their personal fitness goals.
Overall, this book does a great job of removing any stigma or intimidation associated with weight training, debunks many of the misconceptions, and presents each point in a clear, easy to understand format that will serve as a perfect tool to assist the reader to better health and physical appearance.Fundamental Weight Training (Sports Fundamentals Series) Overview

Women's Home Workout Bible ReviewThis book is flat-out terrific. I don't think I've been this happy with a workout book since The New Rules of Lifting for Women. You can set up a simple space for very little money or if you have the desire for a more professional gym-at-home, you can set one up as well using the advice in this book. The budgets range from a minimal $100 to upwards of $2500 (estimates, as your costs locally will vary.)
I just listened to someone complain that their gym played "unsuitable dvds" for their little toddler in the babysitting area. And someone else complained about loud cellphone conversations on the treadmill next to them. Uck. AND it is flu season and perhaps you don't like to watch people wipe their noses on equipment, not wash their hands after you-know-where and drip sweat without wiping it up. If you are grossed out by this, or have no good gym nearby or if you are happier at home, this book is for you. Also for you if getting up and out of the house is an issue; no excuses when the workout area is right next to the tv set.
The book has beautiful photographs that show proper position for using weights on benches, physio ball or bands, as well as machines. These photos are LARGE and CLEAR. While I think it's advisable to see a professional trainer if you are beginning to work out in order to get the best advice on the safest way to position yourself, this book is a great adjunct to occasionally working with a trainer or to re-familiarize yourself.
There are workout routines in the back of the book for core stability, body sculpting, or body conditioning and they are organized by ...budget! Yes. Not everyone has megabucks to set up a home gym. So the workouts go from a hundred dollars to a couple of thousand depending on how you set up your home gym. There is also a table in the front showing which exercises are done with which set of equipment, so if you love doing leg presses on a sled, you will have to substitute leg presses with a resistance band if you don't have this gigantic machine in your budget (I love the sled but it looks like an iron maiden, doesn't work with my decor and costs a bundle.) There is a section on fat loss and intensity training.
The book has info on buying equipment (used? new? local? online? and what about those alluring late-nite-you-saw-it-on-tee-vee inventions that promise to give you a six-pack if you'll only order in the next twenty minutes?) The minimal gym (and minimal space) uses a physio ball (aka Swiss Ball, exercise ball), resistance bands and a few dumbbells and maybe a yoga mat. I have a setup like this in my bedroom where we have no carpet. It takes up maybe 20 square feet if that. I store it in a space about the size of a tv set. (rolled up mat, ball, dumbbells and band.) While I have a larger space in the basement, I often just want to wake up and grab my physio ball and dumbbells and go for it. This set-up is perfect for a dorm room, an apartment or a house where you just have no space for a complete workout area. Literally, your family room can become a decent gym in a few seconds.
The home gym will also work for other workouts that you may already do with DVD or book. For example, Joyce Vedral's Speedy Non-Stop Fat Meltdown uses a bench and three sets of dumbbells. I substitute a physio ball for a bench, but benches are to be had for a reasonable sum especially if you search local classified ads or yard sales.
If I could give this book TEN stars, I would.

Kettlebells For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) ReviewI have always loved baseball and played it until I was 35 when I retired from playing. For the next 25 years I enjoyed coaching my two sons who are now grown up. Last year I decided to go back to the sport I love and play senior softball...but I was a little out of shape. I had a good season but wasn't as strong as I knew I needed to be in order to hit the ball as hard as I used to. My power was gone. After researching Sarah Lurie's website, purchasing a kettlebell, viewing Sarah's DVD and working out, I felt there was something missing. Like I have done when playing baseball I needed to go back to the basic fundamentals. That's where KETTLEBELLS FOR DUMMIES comes in, it lays out the basic fundamentals completely! It has helped me enormously in my workout regimen to get the max out of my workout. I'm feeling my power coming back and last night smoked a shot down the left field line. At 62 I'm having the time of my life! To all you active "Baby Boomers", get yourselves a kettlebell and Sarah Lurie's book. Whether it's senior tennis, golf, softball, basketball, etc., you'll become stronger and feel much better. A must for any sports fanatic "Boomer!"Kettlebells For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) Overview

The Testosterone Advantage Plan : Lose Weight, Gain Muscle, Boost Energy ReviewThis book makes more sense than most. The macro-nutrients are not radically unbalanced in their meals. And the meals are one of the easiest to follow since they basically borrowed the Mediterranean diet (one of the best out there, IMO), and made some slight adjustments to it, which I think were improvements. And I think they make a strong case against the low-fat diet. Nor are the authors taken in with all of the supplemental junk that health magazines try to push over on you. These authors are more savvy than most. And they explain and make a very good case at why weight-lifting has a much better metabolic effect than aerobics alone. Over half of the book covers its exercise program, and it is filled with hundreds of pictures, but this wasn't as much of an interest for me, but it might be for others. I found the book to have many interesting facts and case studies, many I haven't read about before. But the debate over what are the optimum protein levels is far from over. There are some respected nutritionists and scientists out there that think athletes need more protein than the USDA recommends; one the author quotes from is Professor Peter Lemon who is well respected. But there are also other well respected scientists still in the same camp that the USDA protein levels are all you need, and this includes for athletes and body-builders too. E.g., take Professor Ellington Darden. The latter used to be on the high protein bandwagon for ten years of his life until he obtained his P.H.D., and when he did one of his tests on himself, he noticed anytime he went over whatever the USDA recommended for his weight, he was urinating the excess down the toilet. But at least the amounts of protein the author is recommending isn't overly excessive.
The book was under-funded, as most health books are. Despite its title, not once was a single testosterone test done for any of the participants. They mentioned that testosterone tests are very difficult to get good readings on, and they would have had to take all the participants in as boarders to be able to do that. Nevertheless, they still make a good case of it by relying heavily on studies which showed that those who ate more fat, had more testosterone. Some of the other studies were of those taking testosterone supplements.
Not one single participant was thin to test their weight muscle gain program out on. So if you're one of these guys, you'll need to be the first guinea pig. All of the pictures I seen were of heavyweights. They started with 30 volunteers, and ended up with 16. And of that 16 remaining, I only counted 6 before and after pictures of the participants. Even when you look at the final 6 that are left that they choose to be their prime examples of what their plan could do for you; you'll notice the typical before pictures of the person just standing their looking sullen without his shirt on, and making no effort to suck in his gut. With the after pictures, they put on their happy face and half of them have their shirts on for the picture! And only one set of pictures even comes close to having the same before and after pose. Several have their arms up, and it's really amazing what sucking in your gut can do. Despite all of my criticism, you can still see a change, and I think the authors give us accurate measurements. But even when they are giving you personal statistics about the final 6 participants that are left, you'll notice the information is scant. Some left in their before and after bench press numbers; some choose to leave in their before and after chin-ups; nothing is consistent. They choose to pick what they want you to see, and disregard the rest. Now let's see ALL of the pictures and statistics from everyone including the final 10 participants! The Testosterone Advantage Plan : Lose Weight, Gain Muscle, Boost Energy Overview

Sly Moves: My Proven Program to Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, and Live your Dream ReviewA touching memento reproduced on the pages of SLY MOVES is a photo of Steve Reeves in full gladiator costume driving a chariot, autographed to Stallone: "To Sylvester, a man who knew what he wanted and knew how to get there and didn't compromise." In a way this is the closest thing we're probably going to get from the notoriously inarticulate Sly Stallone, and he does have some amazing stories to tell along with the tips on how to lose weight and maintain perfect muscle definition. Did you know he used to clean the lion cages at New York's Bronx Zoo? Frank Capra told Sly that ROCKY was a movie he wished he (Capra) had made! Now, that's a compliment. Elvis invited him to Graceland. Charlie Chaplin asked him to visit Switzerland! His dreams had all come true. SLY MOVES reprints the poem Muhammad Ali wrote in praise of Sly:
"You fought and you worked
You're a determined guy.
Rocky is great
And we all love you, Sly."
His tips include frequent napping. "I'm not suggesting you sleep the afternoons away. That will make you even groggier. Ten minutes max is usually all you need to feel energized and to restore a sense of peace." Lie on the floor with your feet above your heart, he says--resting your ankles on a chair. "Just do it when the boss isn't looking," he advises tongue in cheek. As for eating, Sly opens the refrigerator door and lists all the food he sees there. "2 dozen large organic eggs, a bowl of grapes, 1 small bottle of cinnamon flax seed oil, 1 jar of olives, 1 jar gourmet mustard, 1 six-pack of Diet Pepsi," etc. It's a private peek into the innermost life of a great fitness buff and superstar. I expect that this book will be a big best seller, because everyone wants to look good and few look as good as Stallone even on his worst day!Sly Moves: My Proven Program to Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, and Live your Dream Overview

The 8 Colors of Fitness: Discover Your Color-Coded Fitness Personality and Create an Exercise Program You'll Never Quit ReviewI was amazed at the insight this book offers, that fitness can be made more enjoyable by relatively easy changes. It's a new concept, which doesn't happen often when reading a book.
Everyone has heard of Myers-Briggs, and everyone knows that staying fit greatly increases health and thus the quality of life.
Still, though, everyone knows that fitness can be boring, making it awfully unpleasant -- hence, hard to do.
Okay, but this book helps solve that problem. You gauge your personality type and then choose the type of fitness which will be most interesting for you. And that makes it more likely that you'll do it.
So read this book and live a happier and healthier life -- thanks to this new author.
