Iron Nation ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed this book as it validated all the hard training stories I heard my dad talk about. He wrote a chapter in the book about how it was possible to build muscle without shiny chrome and fancy equipment (Glenn Pieschke). I watched him cross train five days a week his entire life, for over forty years while the pro's have come and gone and died from steroid abuse. This book defines good solid principles, no hype or BS, or fast schemes that don't work. You get what you put into it and your workouts. I follow many of the principles outlined in the book including living a healthy lifestyle and diet. At 18, I'm just starting 'my exercise for life career' and am thankful for the honest info provided in a book like this. Thank goodness theres real information like this out there.Iron Nation Overview

Cross-Training For Dummies ReviewCross-Training For Dummies is like having your own personal trainer! You pick a cross-training plan to follow (I picked the Weight Loss plan, but you can also choose from a "Base Fitness" plan, Athletic plan, or "Mix-n-Match" plan). Each plan tells you how much time you should spend on cardio and strength training, which exercises (cardio and strength training) you should try, and how much time you should spend on flexibility and power. Then, you just turn to the chapters they note to get a description of the exercise you should do! If you are already involved in a sport, you can also find exercises that will help you with that sport. Plus, there are a bunch of charts you can use to track your progress in your general health, body measurements, or weight training.Cross-Training For Dummies Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Weight Training ReviewI have been lifting for a couple years on and off, predominantly by myself and with minimal instruction. After finishing the book, gaps in my weight lifting knowledge that I had not known existed had been filled in. The authors came across as humble, self-effacing, genuinely helpful, and very human. The expressed human element helped to convey that weight lifting can be beneficial for everyone. Looking through the table of contents, a prospective buyer might be surprised that the specific weight lifting exercises are covered in the last half of the book. However, the first half is well worth the price of the book by itself, in my opinion, as it explains the ins and outs of proper nutrition, stretching, gym and gym equipment selection, and gym culture. The authors goals of instilling good habits, good technique, and proper mindfulness in weight lifting is well served. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Weight Training Overview

The Female Body Breakthrough: The Revolutionary Strength-Training Plan for Losing Fat and Getting the Body You Want ReviewI have read and admired Rachel Cosgrove since reading New Rules of Lifting for Women and bought a subscription to Women's Health when I saw her name begin to appear regularly. Her new book is very solid: well-researched nutritional advice, common sense and rational approach to health and fitness, and full of useful photographs and descriptions. The reason I subtracted a star I think may be attributed to her editors rather than the author herself. I enjoy reading Ms. Cosgrove because she's smart, reasonable and walks the walk. I do not read her because she's a woman. I "trust" the advice of people who know what they are talking about because they're educated, well-researched and respectful of their audience. Their chromosomal make-up doesn't usually factor in for me. I don't know if this makes me an anomaly, but someone on Ms. Cosgrove's team felt it important that the reader understand that she gets women because we share body parts.
By the end of the second chapter, I was twitching every time I read the word "girl", "feminine" or a double-dose of exclamation points used to stress the fact that she's fun! friendly! and you don't have to sacrifice femininity to be strong! I found myself skimming sections and actually felt like I was betraying Ms. Cosgrove's hard work in creating what is, in fact, a solid health and workout plan. I lost 75 pounds following the guidance she and her husband set out in New Rules and was looking for her advice on getting to the next stage. I appreciated the fact that some issues that are unique to women (i.e. hormones) were in their own chapters and given the time they deserve. However, I wish they had dialed back the "sisterhood" factor to a 6-7 instead of a 10. Well, at least the cover isn't pink. . .The Female Body Breakthrough: The Revolutionary Strength-Training Plan for Losing Fat and Getting the Body You Want Overview

Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program ReviewEric Cressey knows how to get people bigger and stronger, period. I got to do the Maximum Strength Program last summer and during that time I had my 1RM deadlift go from 275 to 400lbs in four months. I am more mobile than ever and I am no longer in pain (used to be low back). I now have great posture and have built a great base of strength.
This book outlines the four phases with multistep pictures of the exercises (both strength training and mobility/warm-up). Also there is a nice section dedicated towards nutrition as well.
Eric is 110% correct when he says you need to get stronger to get bigger. If you have stalled with your progress and want to get bigger and stronger, there is no better way then with Maximum Strength, for under $15 you can not go wrong.Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program Overview

Starting Strength (2nd edition) ReviewI'd recommend this book for just about everybody who lifts weights. Beginners can greatly benefit from it to learn good form right off the bat. Experienced lifters might also want to check it out because, a) there's always more to learn, and b) your form might not be as good as you think it is.
So what's the book about anyway? Well, the Cliff Notes version is that its a book on how to lift weights PROPERLY using a barbell. A few details:
-the book spends a lot of time discussing the details of all the basic barbell exercises, such as the squat, the bench press, the deadlift, the press, and the power clean. As you might have guessed, the book devotes a whole chapter to each movement. For instance, the squat is discussed on pages 8-63, while the bench press is discussed on pages 66-102- I give you the page numbers to show you how in depth the book goes into each exercise
-you'll learn a lot of details that are often times neglected, such as grip, and the placement of other body parts that are indirectly used during an exercise. As an example, the book spends about 4 pages discussing foot placement during the bench press exercise.
-the book is filled with pictures and diagrams. In fact its hard to find a page that doesn't have one picture or diagram on it.
-the book does also cover "useful assistance exercies" as well, such as chin-ups, dips, rows, barbell curls, etc.
The book ends with a nice section that talks about a lot of "miscellaneous" things, things such as the order of doing exercises, warm-up sets, nutrition, soreness and injuries, etc. As you can see, this is a pretty detailed and comprehensive book, a book I think all weight lifters, beginners and experienced, will get a lot out of. Other weightlifting books of interest include Smokin' Hot Guns!!: How an Average Guy Can Get Big, Muscular Arms In One Workout A Week.Starting Strength (2nd edition) Overview

Gold's Gym Mass Building Training and Nutrition System Reviewthe book contained good exercises, but all are available in any book or from anyone in a gym you ask, the routines were to complicated and not enough attention paid to them, escpecially for beginners or intermediates, the book focused to much on bodybuilding for pro's. if your a beginner or intermediate bodybuilder find a better book you'll only be disapointed with this, especially since the author spends a large proportion of the time talking about previous or current bodybuilders, i didnt buy the book to read about other people, the nutrition section is also useless.....i recommend one of arnies booksGold's Gym Mass Building Training and Nutrition System Overview
