Brain Literacy for Educators and Psychologists (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) ReviewThis book is a wealth of knowledge for those rare bread of educators who are truly interested in integrating scientific knowledge of children into their instruction and assessments. Berninger has a unique way of organizing information and theory into a concise model that allows one to quickly apply that knowledge to almost any situation in education: assessment, curriculum assessment, child assessment, lesson design, special ed lesson design, and child behavior problems.Brain Literacy for Educators and Psychologists (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) Overview

The Dominance Factor: How Knowing Your Dominant Eye, Ear, Brain, Hand, & Foot Can Improve Your Learning ReviewI purchased this book several months ago and I have been slowly integrating into my work with special Ed children. Lots of good, solidly backed information that fits so well with Occupational Therapy in the Classroom. However, this book is not friendly towards the right-brained readers like myself. I had to read the muscle-checking section 20 times before I figured it out, and I am still a little confused. Three other OTs and two PT also struggled with her descriptions. I think this will be the downfall of this otherwise wonderful book. The Dominance Factor: How Knowing Your Dominant Eye, Ear, Brain, Hand, & Foot Can Improve Your Learning Overview

Stronger After Stroke: Your Roadmap to Recovery ReviewStronger After Stroke is motivational, inspirational, insightful, practical and all inclusive! Every stroke survivor should read this book. The author states that if after your stroke, you've accepted your decline the book isn't for you. It's for survivors who want to get better!
It's refreshing to read a book that focuses on recovery rather than adapting one's lifestyle to the stroke. The author states throughout the book that the most important person in the recovery process is the survivor and that it takes hard work for possibly years. One must persevere with patience and never give up. Our brains have the ability to rewire but it takes repetitive, meaningful movements for that rewiring to take place. Levine explains how the brain works and how recovery works with specific tasks to aid in recovery.
We have to take charge of our own recovery. Levine suggests we need to be researchers and read up on the latest stroke recovery research and lists websites to do that research. He also believes survivors would benefit from clinical trials. A large portion of the book is about different treatment options. I really like the author's descriptions of so many varied treatment options. There are wonderful suggestions of what to do in addition to regular therapy.
Another large portion of the book has specific exercises and strategies for recovery that can be done at home. They are practical, easily understood and great suggestions. The author states that recovery takes motivation - people who are motivated make progress but one has to stay motivated when the going gets tough. Setting goals, measuring progress and celebrating every step of progress is crucial and writing it down on a calendar helps us keep track. I love the way he explains terms stroke survivors hear but may not understand. He even included a glossary in the back of the book.
Levine provides tips for caregivers, suggests ways to prevent another stroke, and explains spacsticity and what to do about it. He discusses pros and cons of medications and what to talk about with your doctor. We all deserve quality of life and the author suggests several ways to achieve that but emphasizes it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.
Lastly, Levine discusses many of the recovery machines on the market. He lists the names and websites and what each machine does. This is extremely helpful and a must for stroke survivors. Clinical trials are available and free!
Stronger After Stroke is an all-inclusive book, as you can see. I'm a stroke survivor and have done just about everything Levine suggests. It's been three years and I have gained most everything back. It took 18 months of therapy every day to get my right hand working and was well worth it. His book is an invaluable tool that every stroke survivor, caregiver, physical therapist, occupational therapist and doctor should read. The book is a God-send.

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain ReviewThis book explains in clear terms the role exercise plays in our mental processes. Moving our muscles produces proteins that play roles in our highest thought processes. Ratey says, "thinking is the internalization of movement." He illustrates this with the story of the sea squirt that hatches with a rudimentary spinal cord and 300 brain cells. It has only hours to find a spot of coral on which to put down roots or die. When it does put down roots, it eats its brain. According to Ratey only a moving animal needs a brain.
He begins with the value exercise has for the learning process in high school students: improved academic performance, alertness, attention and motivation.
He cites studies that say we can alter our mental states by physically moving. He said depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. He then presents a chapter where depression is relieved in case studies by exercise.
Among the areas Ratey covers are: stress, depression, ADD, and aging. This book is a great motivator for exercise.
However, Ratey's work was preceded by Glenn Doman's. Doman advocated exercise for brain injured children in the 1950s when the only 'treatment' was to institutionalize them. He later started a `super babies' program. Both the educational and medical establishments attacked and marginalized Doman's work.

Making the Brain Body Connection: A Playful Guide to Releasing Mental, Physical & Emotional Blocks to Success ReviewThis is the book I have been looking for for a long time. We had private BrainGym classes with a BrainGym instructor to help my son's social skills and attention. It worked fine. But it is just too expensive($85/hour). What she did to my son is just what the book describes about ten step change process. In brainGym it is called repatterning/balance. It is very powerful. I would like to learn. So I can do it for my son. But none of BrainGym books give you complete description/steps to do it. Instead they recommend you to take their classes/workshop for several hundred dollars to learn it. It is like a secret. And you need to pay several hundred dollars in order to get the secret. This book is so good and it gives comprehensive instructions. And it tells the secret. And it is easy to follow and implement. I recommend everybody get it and try it. It will work on many areas.Making the Brain Body Connection: A Playful Guide to Releasing Mental, Physical & Emotional Blocks to Success Overview

Brain Gym and Me - Reclaiming the Pleasure of Learning ReviewThis book is superb. As a clinician, I am finding it very explanatory on a scientific level, yet fully understandable for lay people as well. I am so excited about the information that it contains, that I am sharing it with friends, family, fellow parents, and patients in my chronic pain practice, with success.Brain Gym and Me - Reclaiming the Pleasure of Learning Overview
