Lots of good, solidly backed information that fits so well with Occupational Therapy in the Classroom. However, this book is not friendly towards the right-brained readers like myself. I had to read the muscle-checking section 20 times before I figured it out, and I am still a little confused. Three other OTs and two PT also struggled with her descriptions. Just to let you know, my daughter was ONCE profoundly autistic. She was so severe that doctors told us to just give up on her and just let her live her life. Well that is quite hard to do when your child is so aggressive and struggles so much with everything and anything to just not give her a chance. If I had given up, I would not have found Brain Balance. I am forever grateful to Dr. Melillo, his staff, and this wonderful program.
It was so exciting to see her at her birthday party this past week and see her eat cake, bowling, and have just a blast with her friends. She went from being so far into her self and getting worse to an outgoing, curious, humerous, lover of life little girl. I am thrilled with her willingness to try with school and her eagerness to learn the world around her. It is wonderful for her to read me a book, draw me a drawing, help with dinner, participate in Karate, and have friends that do not question whether or not she ever had any issues. She finally has a life.
I know for a personal fact that these stories are not made up. The only reason that others may think this program is to easy or to good to be true, is because our society has taught us to think only one way. We have grown to believe that there is no hope or cure. I never knew this to be true for my daughter, or her two brothers who also completed the Brain Balance Program for ADD and severe allergies. This is a very powerful program that I urge every parent to look into for the future of their child.
I am very excited that this book is finally out. I have looked forward to it for quite some time, in the hopes that families can at least experience what we have gone through. Brain Balance has brought such peace to a household that was once under so much chaos. I had three children at one time dealing with a severity of issues. I cannot even go into detail or put into words how wonderful it is to finally wake up from this nightmare. This program is such a blessing!
Please who ever is reading this, hold on to hope and faith. And never listen to those that are skeptical. This program can turn your child and your families life around as it did ours. Hold on to Believing!!!

Hands on: How to Use Brain Gym in the Classroom ReviewThis book has been a godsend to me (and my son). He struggled with his printing in first grade; when he would pick up the pencil to practice I could see his little body start to tense up. I felt so badly for him. I took a 2 day course by Isabel Cohen based on this book, and I started using her techniques with my son for his handwriting practice. It made a great difference in his writing, but more importantly to me, he stopped tensing up every time he picked up a pencil. There are great charts for both printing and cursive in the book, and it even gives you the proper words to say to your child as you teach them.
I also used her techniques to help my son with spelling, and for a boy with ADHD and a brain injury, he has a 92% spelling average - not too shabby.

I Am the Child: Using Brain Gym with Children Who Have Special Needs ReviewThis is a very inspiring and moving account of Freeman's 2-year response to an ad "Special Day Class Teacher With Severely Handicapped Students" that transformed her own life and that of so many others. The title "I AM the Child" is very significant.It reflects how Freeman entered into the life and soul of each unique child's multiple challenges and needs. She literally imitated each severely handicapped child to get the inner sense, feelings and needs of these 11 exceptional children. Her compassion, openness, the ability to get the cooperation of each child, teachers, parents and general-ed peers, all helped in the process of tranformation. Reading the book is a spiritual experience. From the Christian perspective, you see incarnation in becoming another and salvation as wholeness being lived out again and again in these miracles of learning and growth. The subtitle: "Using Brain Gym with children who have special needs" is a great testimony to Brain Gym and Vision Gym, developed by Paul and Gail Dennison. "These simple movements help stimulate the sensory system, coordinate eyes and hands, and activate core postural muscles, supporting learning from the inside out.(p. 17) Freeman adapted these exercises and was even able to restore sight to one blind child! For a scientific neurological basis of Brain Gym, please read Carla Hannaford's "Smart Moves". What the book conveys is the vision, heart, honesty and courage that inspire every educator and parent. I have bought these two books in the late eighties with the objective of fnding out how they work & how I can make use of them in my own life. Don't worry, I am not brain-injuired or learning-disabled as the technologies in the two books have been formulated originally by the author to help those unfortunate people.
Although there are more than twenty of the Brain Gym exercises introduced, I only use a handful for my own purpose, especially when I read. The exercises I have specifically selected are:
- The Owl exercise;
- The Neck Roll exercise;
- Brain Buttons;
- Cross-Crawl;
- Diaphragmatic Breathing;
I find them very useful in maintaining an active physiological frame of mind & sharp mental focus when I read.
I have been using these Brain Gym exercises on my own for more than fifteen years. I have also taught them to professional adults as well as to students in the schools. The feedback from them has always been positive.
The first book, with the orange cover, is just a summary of the exercises. You need the second book, which is the Teacher Edition, to get a foundational understanding of the exercises.
My only adverse comment about these two books is that the text printing & visual design are comparatively of poor quality, especially after so many years in print.
[For readers who are keen to explore further the significance of physical movements in learning processes, I would recommend strongly 'Smart Moves: Why Learning Is Not All in Your Head' by Dr Carla Hannaford, a neurophysiologist by training. In her book, she reinforces the practical usefulness of Brain Gym exercises, among other innovatve insights about learning & the brain.]Brain Gym: Simple Activities for Whole Brain Learning Overview

Brain Gym: Teacher's Edition ReviewThis book is an excellent introduction and manual for Brain Gym. It not only explains in detail how to do the simple excercises, but gives many scientific explanations for how and why they work.

For those who don't know, Brain Gym is a method whereby brain functions are accessed by performing simple physical movements, and it has been found to profoundly improve ADD/ADHD/Dyslexic conditions as well as other learning disabilities. It is a series of exercises (drawn from all areas of movement -- from the calisthenics we did in phys-ed class to the eye exercises of behavioral optometrists, to acu-pressure points) specifically studied and narrowed down after many years of research to those that were found to optimally affect brain functions. Luckily they are all easy and take only minutes (or even seconds) to do, and they get immediate, verifiable results. In my experience they help students and professionals of all ages learn faster, improve memory and coordination, and generally reduce the stress of adjusting to new situations or learning foreign or difficult tasks.
In my own experience, I no longer teach violin without integrating Brain Gym exercises because the students learn so much faster and develop better technique because they are more relaxed, naturally. I have also taught Brain Gym to writers, musicians, actors, doctors, mathematicians, teachers, dancers, investment bankers, producers etc. and the feedback is consistently positive. If you are a teacher and are interested in this kind of thing, classes are recommended, but the next best thing is to have this little book!Brain Gym: Teacher's Edition Overview
