Cooperative Games and Sports, Joyful Activities for Everyone (Second Edition) ReviewI just finished reading Terry Orlick's new Cooperative Games and Sports book and loved it. The best thing about it was that the games and activities are designed to focus on the fun of playing together rather than the outcome. I have ordered 10 more copies of the book to give as gifts to my friends that have children.Cooperative Games and Sports, Joyful Activities for Everyone (Second Edition) Overview

Chicken and Noodle Games:141 Fun Activities w/Innovative Equipmnt ReviewMany of the items that are used in this book can be found at the dollar store, saving lots of $$$$$$! Games are simple and fun. I have been able to take many of these games and add new rules and objects. My elementary PE classes LOVE these activities. A must for every first year (or 20th year) PE teacher, especially when working with a tight budget.Chicken and Noodle Games:141 Fun Activities w/Innovative Equipmnt Overview

Fundamental Weight Training (Sports Fundamentals Series) ReviewFundamental Weight Training is a wonderful book for those new or inexperienced with resistance training and who are looking for an introductory and basics book not filled with pictures of over-muscled gym monsters or picture-perfect models. With 102 exercises, each with photos and detailed explanations, this book demystifies any misconceptions the reader may have about lifting a little iron.
The first few chapters introduce some of the basics of weight training, including the types of resistance training, gym protocol, language, and beginning stretches. The bulk of the book then devotes a chapter to each of the general body parts, i.e., chest, back, legs, glutes, etc. etc. Finally, to round things out, the book offers up sample programs and routines and also encourages the student to develop their own program based on their personal fitness goals.
Overall, this book does a great job of removing any stigma or intimidation associated with weight training, debunks many of the misconceptions, and presents each point in a clear, easy to understand format that will serve as a perfect tool to assist the reader to better health and physical appearance.Fundamental Weight Training (Sports Fundamentals Series) Overview

Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Lacrosse (Ultimate Guide to Weight Training: Lacrosse) ReviewI am a physical therapist with a lacrosse-obsessed son. I bought this book not because I need to know how to strength-train, but because I wanted to know what muscles should be strength-trained to improve lacrosse performance.
This book has a lot of information about strength-training in general, and it gives nice specific detailed workouts ('Day 2 do these exercises', etc). But it does not tell me anything that I, as a PT, don't already know. For example, it says that for lacrosse, the upper body muscles that should be strengthened are the chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps. Um, yeah. That about covers everything, so - not helpful.
To improve running speed it says to do sprints. Again, not so helpful.
I would say that the author is pretty well-educated with regards to exercise physiology. If you're looking for a concise yet thorough book about strength training, with various strategies for when to train and what you could substitute - this is a good book. If you're looking for information about exactly what muscles to train for lacrosse, I feel this book falls short.Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Lacrosse (Ultimate Guide to Weight Training: Lacrosse) Overview

Play Their Hearts Out: A Coach, His Star Recruit, and the Youth Basketball Machine ReviewI started this book with an expectation that it would be a long magazine article, turned into a book. Instead, I found a richly detailed story about basketball, expectations, and real people in the world of sports.
The story is about more than a star recruit and a coach... this book is about the system of development, where athletes are given small perqs, and coaches collaborate in a system that rewards up and coming, young, very young players. Each step is logical, from shoe contracts to help with homework, from summer camps to being named a starter at a young age.
This book shows what is missing, which is the perspective. Being a good junior player is like being given a lottery ticket. Yet we communicate to these young people that they have nearly won the lottery, that they are special, that they have a chance at the brass ring. Each person -- the parent, the coach, the player, the school administrators -- give their tiny message of unwarranted optimism, of perspective-less encouragement, on a path that is quite unlikely to lead to riches and millions.
The writing is very good, the research is deep and layered, the stories told from many perspectives. At times, reading this book, you want to take the young players aside and give them a more accurate world view -- this book helps you understand that this is what is lacking, entirely, among the well-meaning coaches, high schools, players, camps, shoe companies, and the basketball-industrial complex.
Every coach and every player should read this book to understand the world of basketball within which they live.

Barbie I Can Be: Gymnastics Coach Doll Play Set ReviewMy daughter wanted this set for a long time, we finally found it and purchased it. She doesn't like the little girl as much as the other sets because her legs don't stay together to walk. She doesn't quite get that it's for the gymnastic part. Other than that she loves to make her spin in different positions, we had to make score cards. Just wish it came with mor than one little girl to compete!Barbie I Can Be: Gymnastics Coach Doll Play Set Overview
