The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Gymnastics ReviewThis book is nothing special in my opinion. I bought it expecting a discussion of how weight training can benefit gymnastics training. Unfortunately all I got was a general discussion of how to lift weights. There was little on programming, a decent discussion on periodization, and a good discussion of general lifting exercises...but why do you need general lifting exercises? There's nothing special here. It gives a decent, but not great, overview of how to lift for general conditioning and strength training. Basic questions such as:
How to incorporate weight training with gymnastic training
What lifts will help you power through sticking points in which gymnastic techniques
No discussion of appropriate volume.
One of the biggest problems this book has is it recommends a complete weightlifting regimen. You don't need that if you're training for gymnastics already. You get a lot of strength and explosive work through normal training. Adding a compelte lifting routine on top of that is a sure route to over-training.
I give this three stars because it is a good introductory weight lifting text. It just has nothing special for gymnasts.The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Gymnastics Overview

Shannon Miller: My Child, My Hero ReviewOverall, I think this book is a better book than the one authored by Shannon herself. Yes, it is a bit overdone in spots, but any mother who loves her child is going to overdo things a bit. I also think it's easy to discount the overdramatized and over done things while still enjoying a good read. Shannon's relationships and not so perfect side of life as a world class gymnast are also better discribed here than in Shannon's book, the Miller world doesn't always seem so eerily perfect in this book. I think it's probably as well done and as "objective" of a portrait as any mother could do for her daughter. As for the weight issues and other things, nobody in gymnastics truly ever talks about those things, and most don't find a problem with them. Gymnastics: The Trials, the Triumphs, the Truth (Puffin Nonfiction) ReviewAs a former gymnast of fourteen years and an avid fan of the sport, I must say that this is the worst book on gymnastics I have ever read in my life. The author seems to have little in-depth knowledge of the sport and certain sections of the book, e.g., the sections on Bela Karolyi and the risks of gymnastics, seem suspiciously similar to two other books, Bela Karolyi's "Feel No Fear" and Joan Ryan's "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes." It's as if he summarized their work to make chapters for his book! Also, he fails to present the whole story when speaking of certain events that have taken place in gymnastics over the years, which may be misleading to the uneducated reader. In discussing Julissa Gomez, he tells you that she fell on her head doing the vault, fell into a coma, and died three years later. What he failed to tell you was that she wasn't in a coma following the vault; injured, yes, but in a coma, no. While in the hospital her breathing tube fell out and she was unable to get any oxygen; this led to the coma.
All in all, this is not a great book. If you want to know about the sport, try "Feel No Fear: The Passion, Power, and Politics of a Life in Gymanstics" by Bela Karolyi; "A History of Women's Gymnastics" by Minot Simons II; or, for a look at the darker side of the sport, "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" by Joan Ryan.
At the end of the book, the author said that someone asked him what qualifications he has to write a book on gymnastics. He said none. Well, he should have stopped right there!Gymnastics: The Trials, the Triumphs, the Truth (Puffin Nonfiction) Overview

Little Girls in Pretty Boxes: The Making and Breaking of Elite Gymnasts and Figure Skaters ReviewI think most of the people who gave this book negative reviews are in denial. You can't deny how competitive women's gymnastics and skating are, and how much emphasis is placed on appearance and on winning (look at how Kerri Strug was basically forced to do a vault with a severely injured ankle in the 1996 Olympics--"shake it off," indeed). Even those of us who are merely spectators can see what a high-pressure situation it is, and you can't deny the truth of the stories of Julissa Gomez, Christy Heinrich, and the others. The author is not calling for the abolishment of these sports, just for some changes that might actually make competing a positive, enjoyable experience for the athletes. I hope coaches and parents of the athletes read this book and take it seriously, but most of them will probably deny that it applies to them. Rascals from Haskell's Gym ReviewRemember when they painted all the fire hydrants red white and blue?
This is 119 pages of reading that was new to kids born in the 60's.
Worning - Spoilers ahead:
Summary: Miss Sissy is very involved in the competition between two gymnastics schools, at the same time worrying about her father's efforts to save an old, run-down, but historically-significant and hyphenated-hotel. Her gymnastic-team is challenged by a rival-group that isn't interested in playing-fair.
Ya gotta love him: when Frank draws his lines he makes them thick, black, heavy, and indelible, like an 1976 El Marko... And never more so than in the contest between gymnast slash heroine Sissy Benedict and her conniving rival Juno Heinrich (No relation to the 2008 movie starring Ellen Page and Jennifer Garner - that's a coincidence). The 1976-Juno has had her "back up" since Sissy left Mrs. Heinrich's club, affectionately called "Haskell's Rascals," to join coach Bonnie Walker's Butterflies-- and took almost 20 other rather dissatisfied girl-friends with her to fly with the Butterflies. On top of that, Sissy's widowed father, who's devoted to wood and old buildings (and also maybe the comely Ms. Walker), is consumed with restoring the antique Sam Clement's Mark Twain Hotel that the villainous famous-old-historic-hotel leveler, Mr. Heinrich, has in his sights for the dreaded dreadful wrecking ball. Between practicing her routines and working for that elusive quality called "style" into her Butterfly performance, Sissy worries with her father about if they'll be able to raise the money to purchase and thus, save the hotel. It looks totally impossible when 3,000 individually-raised dollar bills disappear from Dad's dresser, and the gloom is compounded when the Butterflies lose a ""grudge match"" with the Rascals. But the author is only warming up for Sissy's triumph on both of these fronts -- and sure as hard wind blows cold on Lake Michigan in December: she finds the missing cashola on the very night that she leads her club to victory in a much more important four-way-team-meet. All this despite a horribly injured ankle (ala Karate Kid) and them cheating Rascalz' dirty tricks. Oh yeah, the author piles it on high and deep like a metaphor of something really high and deep.) But this book's clearly maid-to-order (No relation to the Ally Sheedy movie of ten years later) for the 1976 gymnastics audience-- but the book is thoroughly proficiently crafted, even generously so for 1976, as such sports story books go.Rascals from Haskell's Gym Overview

Gymnastics Expandable Junior Training Bar ReviewThe materials used to construct this bar are high quality. The mat in the photo hides the major defect of the item: it does not come with stabilizing struts at all. The bar (at the top) is the only item holding the two bases together. If you purchase the extension kit for an additional $100 plus $40 for shipping then you will receive the stabilizing struts along with the leg extenders.
Even with this one complaint, I would advise someone looking for a bar to purchase this piece of equipment. The base is solid, higher-gauge steel and is designed to be sturdy (see the braces on the side of the posts). The bar itself can easily support all members of the family without showing the slightest bit of comprimise (not that we, the parents, perform skills on it, but we've both goofed around on it).
Adjusting it is simple enough, although a bit tedious. We assumed that this used a snap-lock system, but it is a screw-in and unscrew method. Definitely easy to use, just a bit of information for a potential buyer.
Overall, it's safe, it's well constructed, and it's fairly sturdy without the extension kit (50 lb Level IV gymnast using it).Gymnastics Expandable Junior Training Bar Overview

I don't think it would be good for trying anything more difficult. It's not very heavy so it does move a little bit when she is using it. It's very lightweight & she can pick it up, fold it and put it away all by herself. 8ft Tan Suede Folding Beam ReviewI bought this 8' low beam (in pink, with a purple z-fold mat as a combo) directly from The Beam Store. I made the purchase on a Tuesday midday. The set arrived that very Saturday via their standard shipping methods (FedEx Ground/Home Delivery).
It took us 30 minutes to put the low legs on (mostly due to having an overly excited 7 year old 'helping')...but it went together smoothly and easily.
The mat is well made, and the beam is just stunning. My 7 year old is thrilled to have the set in the house and is already practicing her routines from gymnastics class at home. She says this beam is 'softer' than the one at her gym...I'm not sure if she's meaning the padding, or the feel of the material...but either could be a distinct difference due to the sheer wear and usage of any beam you'll see in a gym, vs a brand new piece. Either way, I'm perfectly fine with it being a bit 'softer' at home...gives her more padding so she can work the moves harder before she transfers them back to the high beam at the gym.
The set fits well along the side wall area of our living room so she can have it out all the time, but it's not in the middle of the walking path of the house. It was the same price whether we bought 'standard' colors (beige beam, blue mat) or went with something unique. I'm happy to have gone with the unique route...why not let her gym equipment be tailored for her tastes, if it's the same price as standard colors? She's already taken to walking her beam and mimicking the college gymnasts on ESPN where she can.
My ONLY concern is that the legs of the low beam bring it up off the floor exactly 2", which is the thickness of the mat in the purchased combo. At times it seems the beam is resting on the mat...but when we graduate up later this year or early next and buy the 12" legs to raise it (already predrilled for the higher legs...woot!!!), it'll no longer be an issue.

Guidecraft Balance Beam ReviewWith a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old, both of whom could use a wee bit of improvement with their overall coordination, I decided to order this balance beam as a Christmas gift. It's been a month and a half since it arrived and every single day since we've got it, the kids have played with it. Because the item is a bit long, my wife will often put it away to clear some space, but inevitably within hours the kiddies request that we set it back up.
While not exactly educational, from a results perspective, our kid's overall balance has definitely improved in the short time that we've had it. From a build quality perspective, it's very well made and quite solid. It can be set in the wide or narrow position, though in our case we've only used the wide. It did hold me at 195lbs, though I will admit I was a bit apprehensive and holding my breath. Optimally it's for children and people under 100 lbs or maybe even 150 lbs.
