Bottoms Up ReviewI have struggled with my weight all my life, especially since I turned 40. For three years, I religiously used a Nordic Track-- 5 days a week for 40 minutes--and it still did NOT change my body shape like this book did in three months! Vedral is so right. Put on the muscle and watch your metabolism change! Without consciously going on a diet, I lost 30 pounds. You can forget weighing yourself. Measure progress through the inches that disappear and then go shopping for beautiful sexy new clothes! At one point, I actually GAINED weight but LOST two dress sizes! Who cares what the scale says when your legs look great in a mini-skirt? Who cares what the scale says when you can sleep like a baby at night? Do this workout and your clothes will start hanging on you in a matter of weeks, even if you don't change your diet.
Forget the tempting Info Commercials with all those expensive gadgets, gizmos and pills. You don't need to waste your hard-earned money on a space-hogging Nordic Track, Total Gym or Susanne Sommer's Ab machine. I have tried it ALL and bought hundreds of dollars of worthless stuff that ultimately didn't work. NONE could do what this book did for me! (Example: I tried the Total Gym and found it very disrupting to have to stop and change the mechanical setup from exercise to exercise. I tried the Ab machine and it was awkward and boring.)
All you need with Vedral's workouts are some hand-weights and a simple exercise bench that you can fold up and slide under the bed. You can pick these up cheaply at any yard sale. Don't fall for the unhealthy fad diets and the " fat buster" pills that only make your wallet thinner. Vedral says the truth. There are no shortcuts. If you want to stay healthy, vital and beautiful you gotta exercise and eat right.
The hardest part is to START exercising. Once you start this workout, it is almost EASY to begin to eat right. When you work so hard, you are automatically motivated to stop eating fatty foods. When you give your body what it needs, the destructive cravings for unhealthy foods begins to vanish. It's almost magical. Your body wakes you up, and says, "Hey, listen to me now. I don't want that soda, give me fresh juice... I don't want that ice cream, give me a slice of watermelon instead." Your bad cravings STOP, your colon is stimulated, waste moves faster out of your system, and your skin begins to glow with health. When you exercise first for your health, the weight automatically does down. It's miraculous.
Something AMAZING happens to your body AND mind when you start to work out with weights. Your posture changes and you feel deeply connected at the core. Not only will you slim down and become firm and shapely, but you will gain an almost spiritual sense of what I can only call "centering," a kind of inner balance... like one sees in martial artists.
I DO suggest that you go slowly and DO NOT try and keep up with the instructions in the book. Even you are already exercising, you will be surprised at what this workout will do. Start with one set of exercise (not three) until you are comfortable, then add another set for a couple of weeks, then the third set after a month or more. Use very small weights in the beginning. I jumped right in with 10 lb. weights and did it all vigorously the first day and was so sore I couldn't move for a week. Dumb. Go slowly and gently and you will be up to target at your OWN speed. It doesn't matter HOW long it takes. You may feel like you have two left feet, but don't give up. After a couple of weeks, it gets SO much easier. This workout is good for anyone from teenager to senior citizen.
My only criticism (and it is an important one) is that the book SHOULD have some stretching warm-up and especially a cool-down to stretch out the muscles at the end. She has said that these ARE included in the Bottoms Up video, so I am glad to hear that. If you want to use the book only, be sure to do some basic stretching out at the end. Once you get good at it and don't rest between sets, you will find that the Lower Body part of this workout is strenuous enough to keep your heart rate up and give a decent aerobic workout too.
I originally bought this book because I admire the gutsy, no-nonsense, compassionate author. Vedral is a model of American rags to riches and her Bio is inspirational and heartwarming. She now has a website where you can buy her exercise videos (they're not here on Amazon.) I just ordered The Fat-Burning Workout Video Vol 1 and the set of 3 Definition: Upper, Middle and Lower Body Workout Videos and can't wait to get them! She also has 6 different inspirational audio cassettes to motivate you even more. (I ordered all six.) Check out the Before and After pics too!... LOVE yourself. Buy this book. You are worth it!Bottoms Up Overview

Radu's Simply Fit: Enjoy the Workout of Your Life With America's Leading Fitness Coach ReviewThis is a no frills book that contains a pretty good set of training routines that will work for most physically able people. It follows a very traditional "gymnastic" approach, where isometric exercises are combined with light weight work. This makes it possible to go trough the whole set of training sessions with minimal equipment.
I do like the structure of the training sessions, where there is clear instruction about the warm up, the core session and the cooldown/stretch.
The one drawback about the book is that there are not enough images. Complex exercises are accompanied by a hand drawn graphic that depicts the base start/end of a position, but I would have really liked for all the exercises to have some graphic explanation. I have done a bit of circuit training in the past, so it was not hard for me to pick up from the written cues what a particular exercise or stretch looked like, but I can see how a complete novice may struggle to get the proper position.
In this day and age of many different "new" styles, this book demonstrates that a classic workout is the way to go.Radu's Simply Fit: Enjoy the Workout of Your Life With America's Leading Fitness Coach Overview

The Everything Total Fitness Book (Everything) ReviewI was delighted to find the "Everything Total Fitness Book" because I could not get excited about any of the other fitness resources I had found. It seems that every fitness book I looked at fell into one of two categories: (1) some fad diet/exercise program with a stern looking, very buff person on the cover or (2) some hippy-dippy nonsense about "refocusing energy" or "fitness chakras" etc. Besides, if you're like me, you're not interested in losing weight OR in putting on 50 lbs of straight bicep muscle, you just want to keep in shape and improve your diet... Well, that's this book. The great thing about "Everything..." is that it approaches the subject assuming nothing about you or your fitness agenda -- therefore, the book begins with the very basics of nutrition and exercise and goes from there. The author's unassuming, straightforward approach is very refreshing in that it presents the information matter-of-factly and in a manner that is easily accessible to those who know little about the subject. Also, in addition to being comprehensive with respect to what you put into and what you do with your body, it tries to take into account situations that might fall outside the norm assumed by most of the book (e.g., pregnancy, diabetes, osteoperosis, etc.)
So, if you're like me and are interested in fitness (as opposed to "dieting" or "weight training") then this is an excellent book to get you started off with improving your lifestyle. The Everything Total Fitness Book (Everything) Overview

Now or Never: Keep Your Body Young, Fit and Firm with the Weight Training Program That Works Even as You Age ReviewAlso one of the first book I added to my now extensive collection of strength training/ body-building/ weight lifting/ fitness references. She is a very inspiring author and the before and after photos (especially of herself) are worth a thousand words. I have changed my weight lifting routine countless times over the past 14 years and this routine is by far the one I use most. It gives proven results and keeps me from "plateauing".
I believe those who would enjoy it most are those who are ready for training that packs a wallop! I thought I was fairly strong (for a middle-aged female) before I started on this weight training program. I was surprised at the increase in strength this program gave me. I now use fairly heavy weights (no I can't quite bench press my weight...YET!), but it keeps the compliments coming. What a great feeling to have total strangers comment on your great (and still feminine) muscles and ask you WHERE you work out (not DO you work out?)! This book really kicks up muscle tone and strength by leaps and bounds! You just need to make the time commitment to do this for yourself.
If you would rather not work with somewhat heavier weights, Joyce Vedral's "Bottom's Up" and "Definition" books would be a better bet.Now or Never: Keep Your Body Young, Fit and Firm with the Weight Training Program That Works Even as You Age Overview

Men's Health: The Book of Muscle : The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body ReviewIn many respects this is the perfect first book for someone looking to get into regular exercise. More than most other books in the genre, this one seems to have more than a modicum of scientific understanding backing it. The first sections set the tone, going over the actual science of muscles, why they get bigger, and how. The authors know their audience, though, and don't overdo the science. However, if you are going to lift weights then you need some level of understanding of what things work and why. This first section gives you that. I personally would have liked to see more scientific detail and references but understand that that probably would alienate large chunks of their target audience.
After that primer you get introduced to the major muscles and the exercises that target them. There are also sections on diet, warming up, and stretching. While none of these sections are comprehensive, and many have been done better elsewhere, they are done well enough here that it makes the book a viable one stop shop for beginners.
Before you rush out and buy this, though, there are few caveats.
One, the book does not cater to the home exerciser. Depending on how well stocked your home gym is and how creative you are with coming up with replacement exercises this might not be a big deal, but the exercises DO assume access to barbells, dumbbells, and a machine.
Two, some of the exercise descriptions are lacking detail or, in a few cases, plain wrong. The upright row, for instance, shows a form -- bringing your elbows way above parallel -- that most trainers and researchers caution against because it causes shoulder injury in many people. I would expect the world's most authoritative guide to at least mention this.
Three, the routines provided sometimes leave me scratching my head. They give a cadence for things like the push up hold. The description of this exercise says to "hold the position for the specified period of time" yet the actual routines don't specify a period of time. Am I supposed to hold for 3 seconds or 30 or 90? Who knows?
Four, the routines -- at least early on -- take far too long and seem more like overtraining than training. In "Phase One" King prescribes circuit training and by week three you're supposed to be doing this circuit 2-3 times per day, three days a week. I found that doing the circuit twice took me over an hour. Doing it a third time would have pushed me well over 90 minutes of exercise. Throw in warm up and post-work out stretching and you're looking at a solid two hours. This is for "beginners" and they're supposed to do it three times a week.
Later on in "Phase One" King piles even more work on that. Not only are you supposed to do each circuit 2-3 times, you're supposed to do 2-3 reps of each exercise. In week 6, if you do the minimum number of reps, the minimum number of sets, the minimum number of circuits, all with the minimum recommended resting the whole thing will take you 93 minutes. Do that three times a week. This is for "beginners".
While I like the workouts I think this kind of time commitment is more likely to lead to overtraining rather than useful gains. Admittedly later on it looks like King scales back the time requirements but you have to persevere through 8 weeks of workouts that are easily 90 minutes in length.Men's Health: The Book of Muscle : The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body Overview

Russian Kettlebell Challenge - Xtreme Fitness ReviewThe "Russian Kettlebell Challenge" companion book and video are well-crafted and user-friendly re-introductions to the lost (in America) art of kettle-bell lifting. I took a flyer on the video, which I found sufficiently intriguing that I bought the book and a KB, then another, larger KB, and am poised to buy a third implement. Pavel and his publisher promote KBs as a tool of "extreme fitness," but the average fitness enthusiast ought not be scared off by the advertising hyperbole. KBs are unique in my experience in combining functional strength and endurance training in a single workout which you really can do at home. My 4-month experiment with kettlebells has been very rewarding and an awful lot of fun. RKC (as this book is known among Pavel's "Party" faithful) is the best of his books to date. It describes in words and pictures the how-to's of basic KB moves and variants and gives you the parameters for designing your own workout. Many of the exercises can be done with dumbbells in lieu of kettlebells for those who are reluctant to pop for the implements until they've given the program a try. While the book and the video can each stand alone, they are designed to work best together. The video augments the book by visually presenting the unusual movements. In RKC, as in all of his books and videos, Pavel teaches his lessons with an appealing sense of humor and a heavy emphasis on safe performance. I started with the smallest KB (about 36 pounds) and found it a little daunting at first. After a few weeks, however, I eagerly moved up to the "medium" bell (about 54 pounds) and now, a few months later, plan to complete my set with the big boy (72 pounds). I am in my late 40's and have been physically active all my adult life in a range of activities, including running and cardio kickboxing when they were trendy, as well as biking, swimming, running, weightlifting, various ball sports, etc. None of those activities has been as much fun, or as productive, as RKC. I highly recommend Pavel's RKC book and video, and kettlebell lifting in general.Russian Kettlebell Challenge - Xtreme Fitness OverviewBoth the Soviet Special Forces and numerous world-champion Soviet Olympic athletes used the ancient Russian Kettlebell as their secret weapon for extreme fitness. Thanks to the kettlebell's astonishing ability to turbo charge physical performance, these Soviet supermen creamed their opponents time-and-time-again, with inhuman displays of raw power and explosive strength. Now, former Spetznaz trainer, international fitness author and nationally ranked kettlebell lifter, Pavel Tsatsouline, delivers this secret Soviet weapon into your hands.

Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed reading "Beginner's Guide to Fitness". The introduction of the various factors that should be considered was nicely ordered, progressing from the most basic to the more complex, and paralleled my own experiences in working with the Richmond Marathon Training Team in preparation for my first marathon at age 71. I wish that I had read this book before I started my training. It would have made it easier to get this old body back to the necessary amount of strength and endurance necessary to run 26.2 miles. I'm impressed both by the simplicity and the thoroughness of the advice in this book. I'm recommending it to all of my friends!Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness OverviewFor many people, the thought of getting into shape -- or just the act of exercising for that matter -- is like throwing a speeding locomotive into reverse. An enormous amount of energy has to come to a loud, grinding halt in a short period of time, and then slowly begin to move in the opposite direction.Getting into shape, biologically, is a relatively easy process; the hard part, more often than not, is simply getting started. Being physically fit takes commitment, discipline, concentration, and an overall desire to succeed. Making the commitment to physical fitness, in many ways, presents a greater challenge than the weights and workout routines that will follow; and in the beginning, many people make the mistake of training too hard and too fast, causing soreness, frustration, and discouragement. Walking blindly into a gym and grabbing a piece of equipment in the hopes that something will happen will never work. To achieve your fitness goals, you need to plan your work -- and work your plan.Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness helps you create that plan, by helping you understand your body, and the changes beginning an exercise program will play upon it.Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness covers the importance of making a commitment to exercise, and what results you can expect in the first month. How to keep up your motivation, and develop a fitness program that is right for you. Understanding the importance of weight training and cardiovascular training -- and how to get the maximum benefits of both. Knowing the muscles in the human body and detailed instructions on performing different exercises to work each one; employing proper form to achieve maximum results.Changing one's lifestyle is never easy, especially when food, schedules, and physical exertion are involved. Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness helps ease you into the world of physical fitness. Taking your new exercise program one step at a time helps to condition your body to respond positively to the exciting changes that will come.

From Russia With Tough Love - Kettlebell Challenge ReviewIt should be noted that i'm writing this review for the Kindle Edition and my comments are SPECIFICALLY for the edition and NOT the book. The words seem to be all over the place and don't line up correctly. In some spots there are only a few words on a page, in others the alignment is justified. Even the table of contents is all over the place. The book content is amazing, obviously, but it was pretty aggravating going through the beginning--I look forward to completing the book. The pictures are surprisingly good on the Kindle, but the words definitely need some help. From Russia With Tough Love - Kettlebell Challenge OverviewIn Russia, kettlebells have long been revered as the fitness-tool of choice for Olympic athletes, elite special forces and martial artists. The kettlebell's ballistic movement challenges the body to achieve an unparalleled level of physical conditioning and overall strength. But until now, the astonishing benefits of the Russian kettlebell have been unavailable to all but a few women. Kettlebells have mostly been the sacred preserve of the male professional athlete, the military and other hardcore types. That's about to change, as Russian fitness expert and best selling author Pavel, delivers the first-ever kettlebell program for women. It's wild, but women really can have it all when they access the magical power of Russian kettlebells. Pavel's uncompromising workouts give across-the-board, simultaneous, spectacular and immediate results for all aspects of physical fitness: strength, speed, endurance, fat-burning, you name it. Kettlebells deliver any and everything a woman could want -- if she wants to be in the best-shape-ever of her life. And one handy, super-simple tool -- finally available in woman-friendly sizes -- does it all. No bulky, expensive machines. No complicated gizmos. No time-devouring trips to the gym.

Carrom 510.01 Balance Board ReviewI remember when my father brought his original balance board home after he packed up his parents house. All three of us took to the challenge of being able to stay up on it. Just when we started to get bored with it, our renter from our garage taught us to stretch the limits - first, merely learning to jump and then keep your balance. Within weeks, he was doing a 180 degree jump, and then a 360 degree turn. I am looking forward to our kids (8 and 6) working on their balance skills with this toy.
This toy needs a smooth, hard surface to work well; linoleum, very smooth concrete or hardwood floors are recommended. For long-term durability, I would not recommend using it on typical street concrete as the wood roller beam can get dinged up a bit with loose pebbles and then not roll as smoothly.Carrom 510.01 Balance Board OverviewA valuable conditioning tool for athletes or exercise junkies, the Carrom Balance Board lets you fine-tune your balance and coordination while still having fun. The Balance Board is made of high-quality hard plywood, with a high-quality polyurethane finish and anti-skid strips for better control. To use the board, simply stand up, kneel, or sit on the platform and either balance or rock, depending on your goals. The board will challenge your core, abs, and leg muscles, making it ideal for skiers, snowboarders, surfers, and other board sport enthusiasts. Recommended for ages 6 to adult, the Balance Board measures 31.5 by 6.25 by 10 inches (W x H x D) and offers a weight limit of 300 pounds. Some assembly is required.
