Do Not Go Gentle: Successful Aging for Baby Boomers and All Generations ReviewDo Not Go Gentle: Successful Aging for Baby Boomers (And Everyone Else) is full of personal experiences which, on a visceral level, enables the reader to connect with the text. It is far removed from the usual, clinically dry, psychology textbook and much more akin to the self-help books from the 50s through the 70s which, as a young man, I found to be helpful. They put real life into the subjects of religion, philosophy and psychology and served me well during my 26 years as a high school psychology teacher. Now, however, I am a Greek Orthodox priest, and even though I have moved far away from many of the premises which I previously found so intriguing in those books, they nonetheless formed an indelible impression leading to what I am today. Do Not Go Gentle simply emphasizes what I learned many years ago: To stay young requires one to think young, to act young, and to surround oneself with others of a like mind - no matter what one's chronological age may be. The book reaffirms, for me personally, the philosophy that one is only as old as one believes oneself to be and, conversely, obsessing about age with its supposed limitations on exercise, travel and an active social life often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do Not Go Gentle is a legitimate and professional easy-reading treatise on coming to terms with aging which emphasizes growing older as opposed to simply growing old. As I often say, based on Eric Berne's "natural child ego state," I may grow older, but I refuse to grow up. Buff Dad: The 4-Week Fitness Game Plan for Real Guys ReviewBuff Dad has good basic advice; identifying foods to eat and foods to avoid, and a little explanation about why. Some of the recipes sound awful, although I haven't tried any of them. It has lots of motivational, cheerleader type exhortations pitched at the ordinary Dad with a few pounds to lose. The photos of the author demonstrating the exercises are good, but limited and repetitive. In fact, everything here is repeated at least several times. The 280 pages could easily have been 50-60. But, that's a quibble since the price is right and the messages are clearly delivered.Buff Dad: The 4-Week Fitness Game Plan for Real Guys Overview

Passing for Thin: Losing Half My Weight and Finding My Self ReviewI thought I was going to like both this memoir and its author, but I came away feeling ambivalent about both. (I read about Frances Kuffel in a magazine, and got the impression that her book would be well worth reading, but I did not find that to be the case.)
What put me off the most about Passing for Thin was that, despite having once been fat herself, Kuffel seems devoid of empathy for those who are still fat. She refers to a woman in her OA program as a "fatty" and to her lover's obese son as "Dudley Dursley". (Harry Potter's cousin.) This might be an apt comparison in that Dudley Dursley is indeed obese, but he is also mean, petty and spoiled rotten, so it seems more than a little unkind of Kuffel to mention this particular fictional character when writing about her lover's son.
Having lost half her weight, Kuffel now seems as contemptuous of the obese as the people who used to give her "appalled second glances" when she herself was obese.
I was also put off by Kuffel's relentless narcissism. It's very peculiar that she would choose Janeane Garofalo as a role model, because as far as I can tell, these women have very little in common. Garofalo has been quoted as saying (about a time in her life when she lost a lot of weight in the hope that it would help her land more parts) she hates the vanity that goes with being thin. Kuffel, on the other hand, seems to embrace this kind of vanity, going on and on about various aspects of her appearance. (I watch What Not to Wear and buy fashion magazines from time to time, so the fact that even I was bored by the endless descriptions of Kuffel's various outfits is saying a lot.) It also doesn't seem to occur to Kuffel that, having been supported and encouraged by various OA members for quite some time, she ought to start thinking about supporting other members in return. It is only after her sponsor gently suggests that she should "pay attention to something besides what you look like" and recommends that she volunteers to sponsor someone, that she even considers doing so. And the woman Kuffel ends up sponsoring is chosen because she is "prettier" than all the other OA members in need of a sponsor. Where is it written that if you are the proud owner of a pretty face, you are by definition a fascinating creature and deserving of all the help you can get, whereas if you look like what Kuffel calls a "Drab", then you must surely be drab on the inside as well and not really worth helping? (Or at least, you can't expect someone who is "pretty" to help you.)
I am also mystified as to why the book description compares Passing for Thin to Lucy Grealy's Autobiography of a Face. I read Autobiography of a Face several years ago, and it was, as I recall, a far better memoir than Passing for Thin. For starters, Grealy is nowhere near as self-absorbed as Kuffel, and her writing also flows better. Kuffel's writing style is not as consistent. Sometimes it is ornate to the point of becoming stilted, while other parts of her book read more like the kind of simplistic article you might find in a magazine like Cosmopolitan than like a memoir. (One example is the Planet of Fat/Planet of Girls metaphor, which becomes more tiresome with each passing chapter.) I really don't like book descriptions that try to attract potential readers by comparing the book in question to an already published and greatly acclaimed book. (It's like those annoying movie ads that say: "If you liked that movie, you'll love this movie!" By allowing whoever wrote the book description to compare Passing for Thin to Autobiography of a Face, Kuffel is in effect saying: "Hey, MY book is that great, too!")
While I found Passing for Thin disappointing, I do admire Frances Kuffel for managing to lose weight without the aid of gastric bypass surgery, and despite having been obese for most of her life, and I find it touching and heartening that she was brave enough to put herself out there in terms of dating and romance, despite her insecurity and lack of experience.Passing for Thin: Losing Half My Weight and Finding My Self Overview

The Everything Total Fitness Book (Everything) ReviewI was delighted to find the "Everything Total Fitness Book" because I could not get excited about any of the other fitness resources I had found. It seems that every fitness book I looked at fell into one of two categories: (1) some fad diet/exercise program with a stern looking, very buff person on the cover or (2) some hippy-dippy nonsense about "refocusing energy" or "fitness chakras" etc. Besides, if you're like me, you're not interested in losing weight OR in putting on 50 lbs of straight bicep muscle, you just want to keep in shape and improve your diet... Well, that's this book. The great thing about "Everything..." is that it approaches the subject assuming nothing about you or your fitness agenda -- therefore, the book begins with the very basics of nutrition and exercise and goes from there. The author's unassuming, straightforward approach is very refreshing in that it presents the information matter-of-factly and in a manner that is easily accessible to those who know little about the subject. Also, in addition to being comprehensive with respect to what you put into and what you do with your body, it tries to take into account situations that might fall outside the norm assumed by most of the book (e.g., pregnancy, diabetes, osteoperosis, etc.)
So, if you're like me and are interested in fitness (as opposed to "dieting" or "weight training") then this is an excellent book to get you started off with improving your lifestyle. The Everything Total Fitness Book (Everything) Overview

The Fat-Burning Workout: From Fat to Firm in 24 Days ReviewIn 1993, I was fat, out of shape and somewhat hopeless. I had tried running, stair-stepping, and cycling to little avail. I would lose 5 to 10lbs and while my body was smaller, it really didn't look that much better. I was cardiovascularly fit but physically I seem to have little to show for the hours I spent sweating in the gym. In a desperate search for some real help, I found Joyce's book in a public library. It was a book that profoundly changed my life.
For a former couch potato and self-proclaimed nerd, this book was perfect for bringing me quickly up to speed on how to reshape and redesign the body I thought I was stuck with. Joyce described the importance of aerobics, good nutrition, and good form. Plus she made it simple enough to avoid intimidating a person as ignorant about fitness as I was. (Prior to her book, I had believed that if I lost weight once and then stopped working out the weight would never come back)
I liked the way she detailed a workable plan that wasn't overwhelming. The cheerful and informative way she wrote the book made it a text I relied on for years. I've loaned this book to friends and occasionally still reread it when I'm in a fitness slump. While I don't believe her claims of Fat to Firm in 24 days, I do believe in her high-rep low-weight superset routine. I now have a definition and shape that my friends (fit long before me)only dream of. Some of it is natural propensity but the other is Vedral's innovative technique.
Although it took me longer than her book claimed(I didn't follow the diet exactly) I did lose 30lbs and gained a lovely, symmetrical sturdy shape. I swear by her abdominal routine which defines my serratus lines.
My discovery of this book was a turning point in my life and I highly recommend it to anyone who's just starting out with fitness. It gives you an excellent fundamental knowledge and a results-producing plan. The Fat-Burning Workout: From Fat to Firm in 24 Days Overview

The Traveler's Diet: Eating Right and Staying Fit on the Road ReviewI was hoping for something more practical. This book was rather disappointing. It consists mostly of the author's experience with a rather complex (and expensive) "system" for diet and exercise. Here's what I would have rather seen:
1) Instead of a list of menu items at specific (expensive) hotels around the world, I would rather have gotten some guidance on how to select healthier menu items regardless of which hotel I find myself in. Menus in restaurants change too often for a "list" to be very practical. Also, I don't stay in the same hotels the author does, so the list is not useful.
2) It is also not very practical to me to have the personal trainer at the hotel direct me straight to the gym as soon as I check in instead of going to my room. To be able to do this, the author sends his luggage by courier in advance (so that he doesn't have to haul his "stuff" with him) and the hotel puts it in his room for him to. How about some advice for us mere mortals who might not even be in a hotel with a first class gym and personal trainer? Or no gym at all? (Let's see, what is the expense report charge number for "personal trainer"?...Oh, that's right, I don't HAVE one!)
3) I don't need a pound by pound description of what his personal trainers back home thought of his exercise and weigh-in sessions. Give me a practical, on-the-road plan to follow. Too much of the book is spent describing the author's personal adventure in weight loss and exercise with very little practical information.
4) He describes the exercises he followed by name only. Most of them I recognized, but some I didn't. How about a description of the exercises for those of us without a "personal" personal trainer?
To sum it up, this seemed more like a personal diary that a useful guide to "Eating Right and Staying Fit on the Road". I'm glad that the author travels 400,000 mile a year, (and am even more glad that I don't!!). I'm glad that he lost weight and got in shape, (I need to) and that he was successful at working out a program and then following it (again, I need to). I'm also glad that he stays only in the best hotels with marvelous facilities and that he doesn't have to lug luggage around and that he has a team of personal trainers and others to look after him, including personal trainers who attentively meet him at the front desk of the hotel...etc, etc. (I don;t and I'm jealous!!!). :^)
How about something that those of us travelers who live in the "real world" can follow? The Traveler's Diet: Eating Right and Staying Fit on the Road Overview

Flip the Switch: 40 Anytime, Anywhere Meditations in 5 Minutes or Less ReviewI'm a psychologist, and I've been trying for years to get my clients to meditate as part of their treatment, with little success. I can count on the fingers of one hand those who have learned to meditate and stuck to the practice over time, even though it's one of the most successful methods we know of to deal with chronic anxiety.
This book is a gem. It's short, easy to read, contains all the basics, and is well organized. The author has somehow distilled the essence of mindfullness meditation into 172 pages. Now all those people who think they don't have time to meditate can learn how to do it on the fly. Lots of very cool exercises to do, many taking less than a minute. The idea of brief meditations scattered throughout the day is brilliant. I'm ordering a bunch of these little books, to give to my clients, and hoping I'll have more success with these than with others I've recommended.
I love this book!Flip the Switch: 40 Anytime, Anywhere Meditations in 5 Minutes or Less Overview

The Weight-Loss Diaries ReviewThe first thing that grabbed me was the title. As a three-plus decade veteran of the food wars, I always want to know how it works for other people. Then I saw that Courtney Rubin was the author. Like many other reviewers, I followed Rubin's Shape articles faithfully...now I get to see how the story ended!
Well, not really.
I love Courtney's voice; her wit and down-in-the-trenches honesty make the book a serious page turner. There were so many "Yes! That's exactly what it's like!!" moments while I read. As for her observations about others--isn't that how we all think when we are stressed and struggling? How refreshing to hear someone admit that there are times when it feels like no one on earth can understand how low you really are. When food has become your confidant and medication, a lack of food leaves a big hole. If you haven't felt it, you'll never get it.
The reason I give the book three stars (3-and-a-half, actually) is that the latter third of the book felt like it floundered. The narrative thread that was so strong in the beginning seemed to unravel and lead to a very vague and nebulous ending. I understand that rarely are there neat and tidy ends to real life stories. Courtney is young and her story is still happening. For me, though, the book would have felt more solid with something a bit more conclusive. By "Month 20" I was starting to get frustrated by a sense of redundancy that was capped off by a fast fade..."Okay, enough of this, story over." Maybe this book should have simmered a few more years before coming to press.
I do wish Courtney Rubin all the best and thank her for a glimpse into her struggles and victories. The Weight-Loss Diaries Overview

The 90-Day Fitness Challenge: A Proven Program for Better Health and Lasting Weight Loss ReviewPhil and Amy Parham lost over 256 pounds on NBC's Biggest Loser television show's sixth season in 2008. It was a dark time in the life of this couple whose autistic son Rhett's special needs kept them on high alert 24/7 and Phil's mortgage broker business had failed a few years earlier. The couple discusses how they coped with these life stresses...by eating. Their story of disappointment and defeat could be told by any number of families across the United States, but their courage and resilience at overcoming these hefty challenges is remarkably and singularly inspiring.
The Parham's have written this comprehensive resource, The 90-Day Fitness Challenge, to instruct, coach, encourage, and offer day-by-day practical insights to losing weight from not only a physical standpoint, but an emotional and spiritual one as well. Their foundational motto for lifelong change is the DREAM principle. "Dream about what you want your life to be. Recognize where you are today. Eat to live. Activate your body. Make a difference in the lives of others." Throughout this lively and winsomely written text, readers will learn weight loss basics, daily tips to `tip' the scale lower, exercise and lifestyle programs, and much, much more. If there was ever a "one size fits all" weight loss manual, this is it. And to sweeten the deal, this book isn't just for people wanting to loss extra pounds, there's plenty of bodybuilding, character molding, and soul-strengthening supplements on every page for every body.

The Testosterone Advantage Plan : Lose Weight, Gain Muscle, Boost Energy ReviewThis book makes more sense than most. The macro-nutrients are not radically unbalanced in their meals. And the meals are one of the easiest to follow since they basically borrowed the Mediterranean diet (one of the best out there, IMO), and made some slight adjustments to it, which I think were improvements. And I think they make a strong case against the low-fat diet. Nor are the authors taken in with all of the supplemental junk that health magazines try to push over on you. These authors are more savvy than most. And they explain and make a very good case at why weight-lifting has a much better metabolic effect than aerobics alone. Over half of the book covers its exercise program, and it is filled with hundreds of pictures, but this wasn't as much of an interest for me, but it might be for others. I found the book to have many interesting facts and case studies, many I haven't read about before. But the debate over what are the optimum protein levels is far from over. There are some respected nutritionists and scientists out there that think athletes need more protein than the USDA recommends; one the author quotes from is Professor Peter Lemon who is well respected. But there are also other well respected scientists still in the same camp that the USDA protein levels are all you need, and this includes for athletes and body-builders too. E.g., take Professor Ellington Darden. The latter used to be on the high protein bandwagon for ten years of his life until he obtained his P.H.D., and when he did one of his tests on himself, he noticed anytime he went over whatever the USDA recommended for his weight, he was urinating the excess down the toilet. But at least the amounts of protein the author is recommending isn't overly excessive.
The book was under-funded, as most health books are. Despite its title, not once was a single testosterone test done for any of the participants. They mentioned that testosterone tests are very difficult to get good readings on, and they would have had to take all the participants in as boarders to be able to do that. Nevertheless, they still make a good case of it by relying heavily on studies which showed that those who ate more fat, had more testosterone. Some of the other studies were of those taking testosterone supplements.
Not one single participant was thin to test their weight muscle gain program out on. So if you're one of these guys, you'll need to be the first guinea pig. All of the pictures I seen were of heavyweights. They started with 30 volunteers, and ended up with 16. And of that 16 remaining, I only counted 6 before and after pictures of the participants. Even when you look at the final 6 that are left that they choose to be their prime examples of what their plan could do for you; you'll notice the typical before pictures of the person just standing their looking sullen without his shirt on, and making no effort to suck in his gut. With the after pictures, they put on their happy face and half of them have their shirts on for the picture! And only one set of pictures even comes close to having the same before and after pose. Several have their arms up, and it's really amazing what sucking in your gut can do. Despite all of my criticism, you can still see a change, and I think the authors give us accurate measurements. But even when they are giving you personal statistics about the final 6 participants that are left, you'll notice the information is scant. Some left in their before and after bench press numbers; some choose to leave in their before and after chin-ups; nothing is consistent. They choose to pick what they want you to see, and disregard the rest. Now let's see ALL of the pictures and statistics from everyone including the final 10 participants! The Testosterone Advantage Plan : Lose Weight, Gain Muscle, Boost Energy Overview

The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us about Weight Loss, Fitness, and Aging Review
Several people have expressed disappointment with "The New Evolution Diet", and I find exception with them. Perhaps they are expecting too much since many are subscribers to the author's website. Here is what you need to know in very simple language in just a few paragraphs. There are thousands of books out there on fitness, dieting, longevity, etc. They basically all fail in their objective because none of them start out with who we really are from an evolutionary standpoint. We also know that if any of these diet books worked, we would all flock to it. It would be scientifically confirmed, and all of us would be back down to a normal size, but no such book exists. The key to the puzzle is to use an evolutionary approach. Our ancestors go back several million years. You can go to the Museum of Natural History in New York and see Lucy's bones, one of our ancestors that go back five million years. Turkana Boy goes back 3 million years. His bones are also in the museum. Scientists believe that our biology has not changed in at least 200,000 years. This means that if we could take a new born child from the time of his birth 200,000 years ago, he should be able to grow up in our society perfectly adjusted both physically and mentally. The only real argument against this concept is Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious. So here is the key point. Our bodies and souls were formed over a period of time lasting hundreds of thousands of years. Life did not change much during this period, however in the last several hundred years' life has changed drastically. We have to go back tens of thousands of years to the so called cave man to understand how our bodies are hardwired to live a certain way. What was life like 400,000 years ago when our biology was formed. The one thing we absolutely do not know is how long it will take for our species to genetically adapt to its new modern environment - the 20th and 21st century if you will. The answer has to be tens of thousands of additional years. Life in 400,000 BCWe were hunter / gatherers. We went out for food when we were hungry. There was no refrigeration. There were no 3 balanced meals a day nonsense, none of the advice about eating small portions. The idea of one hour a day for exercise was nonsense too. Humans lived like lions. When they found large amounts of food they ate lavishly and then hung out and lay around like the lions do today. We ate grass fed meats, our fish was not salmon harvested on farms but wild caught fish. There were fresh fruits and vegetables. That's it because agriculture did not come into being until 10,000 years ago, when humans figured out how to sow seed and grow produce in predetermined areas. We have gotten completely away from our previous evolutionary lifestyles, and this has cost us dearly. We are now the most overweight nation in history, and getting heavier. It has to stop, and this book gives you an answer that works. The answer is to live and eat PALEO, meaning live like you were in the cave man era. This means you will mimic the diet and lifestyle of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. You can do this with very little input from any other sources. Just think about it. Our ancestors did not have bread products. They couldn't bake, and so our body systems are not genetically engineered to handle the refined carbohydrate products we ingest. Makes sense doesn't it? Dairy products like cheese did not exist, and again our bodies are not adapted for it. We may adapt over the next couple of hundred thousand years, but that does not help us now. Read this Book - It will change your life!!!Unlike other readers, I have found the author to be excellent at spelling out for you exactly how the caveman diet works and what the implications are for each of us. Just always keep in mind that we were genetically engineered to survive in a world different from our own. You want to eat only those foods that the early cave man ate. You want to skip meals now and then also because there were no regular supplies of food throughout the tens of thousands of years of human history. We also live just as long as our ancestors did. This is a major misinterpretation of history. Our ancestors suffered far greater death at the hands of infections, accidents, predators, and infant mortality. That is why people say that we live longer today, but simply is not true. The book points out that most diet books will tell us to exercise more, and eat less. Our genetic impulse is the opposite, and this is just about the only book that points this out. We are programmed by our biological history to gorge ourselves on food when it is available. Our biological desire is not to exercise but lord over the land like the lions with periodic bursts of energy required to hunt and gather food. CONCLUSION:I loved De Vany's work and the author has hit the nail right on the head. If you read this book and thoroughly engross yourself in it for a month or two while following its tailored program, you will effectuate CHANGE your world. You will replicate the caveman's experience, and your body will respond by moving towards your individualized optimum weight. There is simply no other way to do it that will have a lasting effect. We have to return to our ancestral roots, and live in congruence with who and what we are. Read the book and change your life, and thank you for reading this review. Richard C. Stoyeck

Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest to Discover If Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, or Why Pie Is Not the Answer ReviewJen Lancaster just may be the funniest writer ever! I've read all three of her books, and each of them made me laugh so hard that I nearly wet myself. (I guess you really didn't need to know that, did you? Too late.)
In Jen's most recent memoir, "Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest To Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, Or Why Pie is Not The Answer" (love those ridiculously long titles!), Jen tackles her biggest challenge yet: her weight. Screw unemployment and psychotic Chicago neighbors: Nothing is scarier for a woman then stepping on the bathroom scale. In Jen's case, she wasn't happy with the numbers she saw on that scale, so she decided to do something about it. Well, actually, she sold a book proposal about trying to lose weight, so she kind of HAD to do something about it. But that's not the point. Jen never used to be the type of woman who would go to the gym every day (or at all). However, she decided to face her fears and give her physical well-being the same kind of attention she devoted to other important aspects of her life: her husband, her pets, her drinking, her shoe fetish, etc.
"Such a Pretty Fat" is a very honest look at what it took for Jen to get herself in shape. Nobody said it was going to be easy. She stumbled plenty of times along the way and gave nearly every diet plan a try, from Atkins to crash dieting to Jenny Craig to Weight Watchers. In the end, Jen finally realized that most diets are B.S. The key to losing weight and being healthy is to make responsible choices and (duh!) exercise. And that's exactly what Jen did.
I think "Such a Pretty Fat" is Jen's best book to date. (My only complaint is that certain chapters gave me monstrous cravings for things like ribs, Twinkies, and Olive Garden bread sticks...damn you, Jen!) Not only is the book chock full of Jen's snarky humor (and the footnotes...I LOVE the footnotes!), but it's also an inspiring true story about a plus-size woman's determination to lose weight. I really admire Jen for her honesty, her dedication, and her results. In addition to losing a lot of weight, she became a fitter person and felt much better about herself, which is really what being healthy is all about.Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest to Discover If Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, or Why Pie Is Not the Answer Overview

Fitness For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) ReviewThese authors love to shop as much as they love to exercise.
As a fitness neophyte, I turned once again to the Dummies series for its comprehensive, unbiased coverage of broad topics. What disappointed me about this selection is its enthusiasm for expensive gadgetry, club memberships, and professional consultation.
Admittedly, a healthy lifestyle isn't without a price tag, but this is ridiculous. In almost every chapter of this book (including a couple devoted entirely to the subject), you can expect to find one or more words of advice encouraging the reader to go shell out some more dough for one thing or another - a heart monitor, a personal trainer, a water pack, a dietician, a special mat for stretching exercises, etc. If you bought every item they recommended throughout the course of this book, you'd spend a full year's salary and fill a bedroom with all your new junk!
While they do advise against some of the more foolish purchases, such as those fat-zapping electrodes sold on infomercials, they spend little time extolling the virtues of those invaluable exercises you can do for free - stair walking, push ups, pull ups, etc. The chapter on exercising at home is a veritable catalog of the fanciest equipment money can buy, rather than suggestions of exercises you can do on a bare floor with your own body weight.
The authors also go a little skimpy on such topics as nutrition and weight training, but make darn sure to point you in the direction of other related titles in the "for Dummies" series.
If you generally like the Dummies books, do a little more shopping before you put your faith in this one.Fitness For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) Overview
