28-Day Body Shapeover ReviewI have just finished my third week on this program and I'm really happy with the results. I've lost five pounds on the scale, but more importantly my body feels toner and my clothes fit better. The book is very easy to follow. It has separate pages for each of the 28 days of the program with exactly what you are supposed to eat and exercise. There are home workouts provided but I take this to the gym with me. It makes it really easy to just go through the workout knowing the exact routine. I really like the exercise descriptions which are clear and with good pictures to show exactly what you need to do. I'm excited to keep using this over the coming months. My goal is to lose a total of 20 pounds and get really toned for summer!

Women's Home Workout Bible ReviewThis book is flat-out terrific. I don't think I've been this happy with a workout book since The New Rules of Lifting for Women. You can set up a simple space for very little money or if you have the desire for a more professional gym-at-home, you can set one up as well using the advice in this book. The budgets range from a minimal $100 to upwards of $2500 (estimates, as your costs locally will vary.)
I just listened to someone complain that their gym played "unsuitable dvds" for their little toddler in the babysitting area. And someone else complained about loud cellphone conversations on the treadmill next to them. Uck. AND it is flu season and perhaps you don't like to watch people wipe their noses on equipment, not wash their hands after you-know-where and drip sweat without wiping it up. If you are grossed out by this, or have no good gym nearby or if you are happier at home, this book is for you. Also for you if getting up and out of the house is an issue; no excuses when the workout area is right next to the tv set.
The book has beautiful photographs that show proper position for using weights on benches, physio ball or bands, as well as machines. These photos are LARGE and CLEAR. While I think it's advisable to see a professional trainer if you are beginning to work out in order to get the best advice on the safest way to position yourself, this book is a great adjunct to occasionally working with a trainer or to re-familiarize yourself.
There are workout routines in the back of the book for core stability, body sculpting, or body conditioning and they are organized by ...budget! Yes. Not everyone has megabucks to set up a home gym. So the workouts go from a hundred dollars to a couple of thousand depending on how you set up your home gym. There is also a table in the front showing which exercises are done with which set of equipment, so if you love doing leg presses on a sled, you will have to substitute leg presses with a resistance band if you don't have this gigantic machine in your budget (I love the sled but it looks like an iron maiden, doesn't work with my decor and costs a bundle.) There is a section on fat loss and intensity training.
The book has info on buying equipment (used? new? local? online? and what about those alluring late-nite-you-saw-it-on-tee-vee inventions that promise to give you a six-pack if you'll only order in the next twenty minutes?) The minimal gym (and minimal space) uses a physio ball (aka Swiss Ball, exercise ball), resistance bands and a few dumbbells and maybe a yoga mat. I have a setup like this in my bedroom where we have no carpet. It takes up maybe 20 square feet if that. I store it in a space about the size of a tv set. (rolled up mat, ball, dumbbells and band.) While I have a larger space in the basement, I often just want to wake up and grab my physio ball and dumbbells and go for it. This set-up is perfect for a dorm room, an apartment or a house where you just have no space for a complete workout area. Literally, your family room can become a decent gym in a few seconds.
The home gym will also work for other workouts that you may already do with DVD or book. For example, Joyce Vedral's Speedy Non-Stop Fat Meltdown uses a bench and three sets of dumbbells. I substitute a physio ball for a bench, but benches are to be had for a reasonable sum especially if you search local classified ads or yard sales.
If I could give this book TEN stars, I would.

Hot (Sweaty) Mamas: Five Secrets to Life as a Fit Mom ReviewI like the authors' practical approach to being a Fit Mom. The book includes suggestions for fitting workouts into family life as well as tips for handling spouses who may or may not support your athletic endeavors. I like the Mom2Mom sections where real moms 'fess up to some of the crazy things they've done in the name of post-natal exercise. (anyone else used your baby as a dumbell?)
The authors acknowledge the fact that some advice is just tired. "Work out while the baby sleeps" assumes that your baby will always sleep! Instead, the book offers suggestions for exercising with the baby and guilt-free motivation for leaving baby at home while you run, bike, swim etc.Hot (Sweaty) Mamas: Five Secrets to Life as a Fit Mom Overview

The Amazing Water Bottle Workout: No Gym No Problem ReviewThe Amazing Water Bottle Workout is very practical. Its a great book for those that don't have time to go to the gym or travel. The book is very thourough and easy to read. I like how the workouts give you the page # of each exercise. This helps ensure your form is correct before you start the workout. The Author also included workouts for every fitness level. It even has a water bottle weight equalivent chart. How creative! I like that you can use the book with either water bottles or dumbbells. The Amazing Water Bottle Workout: No Gym No Problem Overview

The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women: A 4-Week Head-to-Toe Makeover ReviewBeing a Personal Trainer, I enjoy reading all the fitness books that hit the market. Most of them have gimmicky workouts and strict eating regimens that are almost impossible to maintain long enough to see good results. Admittedly, I thought this book would be the same. Boxing for women? Surely some marketing genius was riding the coattails of a blockbuster movie, but what the heck... I am a trainer... it is what I do.
World-renowned trainer Hector Roca and owner of Gleason's Gym (an icon in the world of boxing), Bruce Silverglade, have published boxing secrets for women in The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women. This book outlines a step-by-step program that promises to get any woman into knockout shape in just four weeks.
Four weeks? Okay, so everyone knows that boxing is a dynamic exercise program in and of itself, but four weeks? I had to put it to the test. I read the book, looked over the drawings that I found particularly appealing to the female eye, learned the moves and got started, but I was mystified. Where was the strict eating plan? I searched the book cover to cover to find that the eating plan for a boxer was just using common sense, and that the best food for boxers was beans and rice! My vegetarian self was overjoyed! I can eat my carbs and get lean too? I was eager to put this program to the test!
Using unique combinations of muscle groups and both aerobic and weight training movements, this program works out the entire body at one time! Very effective and time saving, this program won't send you to the poor house either; all you are going to need is a jump rope and the motivation to get started (look at Hillary Swank's arms in Million Dollar Baby). Hector Roca takes you from how to make a fist all the way to awesome combinations. The most difficult part for me was getting reaquainted with my jump rope. Boxers jump rope because it helps with balance, speed, agility and it burns fat like nothing else!
So here I sit 4 weeks after starting the program. Does it work? Well, it worked for me. I am down 8 lbs. and 6 inches. If you need to switch up to a more exciting workout program that won't leave you starving but give you results, I highly recommend $2.00 jump rope, a bean burrito and this book. The Gleason's Gym Total Body Boxing Workout for Women: A 4-Week Head-to-Toe Makeover Overview
